TV Discussion: December 2016 - February 2017

Hello fellow TV Addicts!  The holidays and mid-season hiatuses are upon us, but I'm sure there will still be some shows to discuss.  We'll discuss all non-recapped shows here for the next couple of months.  Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!  See you in the comments.

The Walking Dead: Season 7 Episode 8 - Hearts Still Beating

Hello friends and welcome to our mid-season 7 finale coverage of The Walking Dead! I think I can speak for the majority when I let out a sigh of relief and say, "FINALLY!!!"  I think we know how show runner Scott Gimple works now.  He has 8 episode groupings and he uses them in strategic fashion.  We got a lot of stand-alone stories that all consolidated into "almost" one by the end of this finale.  So, the next 8 will have a completely different feel to them while still sticking to the theme of season 7.  This episode was another showcase of how awful a person Negan is (yet continually still charming due to the actor playing him).  But, this episode had something that the 7 that preceded it didn't have.  HOPE.  But, sometimes you have to earn a chance to see that hope.  This was a painful run of episodes to get through.  But, like some of the other slowest and grueling parts of the series, it increases your investment in the payoff episodes like this.  Whether it was a good enough payoff for everyone?  I can't answer that!  But, I enjoyed the episode and am excited to start kicking some Savior butt!  Let's dive in!

The Walking Dead: Season 7 Episode 7 - Sing Me a Song

Hello friends and welcome back to our season 7 coverage of The Walking Dead.  Things are escalating to get us to the mid-season finale next week.  We finally followed multiple storylines as some of the stories setup over the past few episodes begin to pay off.  Let's dive in.

The Walking Dead: Season 7 Episode 6 - Swear

Hello everyone and welcome back to our season 7 discussion of The Walking Dead!  Well, it happened.  We hoped it wouldn't, but it did.  We got our Tara/Heath episode.  It wasn't horrible, it wasn't great either.  But, I'm sure it played an all important puzzle piece in resolving the mystery of this season's big question.  How on earth will they take on Negan?  Oceanside may contain one very important key that Rick and crew will need to unite these colonies and rise up against their oppressor.     But we're going to need Tara to stop lying about it! Let's dive in.

The Walking Dead: Season 7 Episode 5 - Go Getters

Hello friends and welcome back to our discussion of The Walking Dead!  We have main characters spread all over the place.  And have a storyline in yet another location.  And don't you worry, we still haven't gotten to our A-Listers Tara and Heath!  Fortunately, this episode did feature one of the crowd favorites in Maggie.  I guess you could say this episode offers a "little" hope against the saviors.  For 4 episodes we've pretty much watched everyone take crap from the saviors.  This is the first episode since last season where we see people wanting to make an effort to stop the madness.  This will be a short discussion during this holiday week, but let's get started!

The Walking Dead: Season 7 Episode 4 - Service

Hello everyone and welcome back to our season 7 discussion of The Walking Dead!  This was yet another pretty brutal episode to watch.  Not brutal of the gruesome variety, but of the mental torture and threat of more gruesomeness.  We get it.  Negan is bad!  If we didn't get it, we got 90 more minutes to figure it out.  I'm not saying the episode wasn't essential.  I'll discuss why I think it was.  But, there's no denying that it's a painful show to watch right now with Rick and his crew down and out.  All things must be earned though.  We will see them rise again!  (Surely, right?)  Let's dive in.

The Walking Dead: Season 7 Episode 3 - The Cell

Hello everyone and welcome back to our season 7 discussion of The Walking Dead!  We got another episode focused on a couple characters this week.  But due to their surroundings we were able to pick up a lot of information on Negan and Savior life!  Let's have a little chat about the episode below and when we're done we'll feel like we're all doing some time on Easy Street!

The Walking Dead: Season 7 Episode 2 - The Well

Hello friends and welcome back!  Season 7 of The Walking Dead took us by storm last week and decided to slow things down a bit this week.  Some may complain, some my cry out in praise.  As the show has done in recent seasons, we focused on one specific storyline for the entire 40+ minutes.  I'm sure they know that Carol and Morgan can carry an episode on their own.  Hopefully, we won't be getting a Tara/Heath romp through the forest solo episode!  We certainly learned a few things in this episode, met some new characters and saw a bit of how the larger world ties together.  Let's dive in and discuss!

The Walking Dead: Season 7 Episode 1 - The Day Will Come When You Won't...

Hello everyone and welcome back to The Walking Dead season 7!  It's been a long off-season of guessing.  We knew we were in for a stressful hour of television, but we still anxiously anticipated it for months.  And WOW what a crazy episode.  The show runners defended their decision to end last season where they did suggesting that this season would kick off a new ERA of The Walking Dead.  Now that we've seen it I think I can understand where they were coming from.  We worried if we'd be able to mentally get back in the intensity of the moment and be invested in who Negan took out.  I think they successfully had me nauseous the entire hour.  So, kudos to them!  And big kudos to Jeffrey Dean Morgan.  The man is a likable actor in pretty much every role he plays.  You definitely want to hate him as Negan, but there's something about him that is just irrefutably charming.  He's literally killing it as Negan.  It's going to be an interesting ride this season and beyond!

I don't really know if there's much to recap after that grueling hour but I'll certainly jot down a few notes before we head into the comments.  Let's dive in!

TV Discussion: Fall 2016 September-October

Hello fellow TV Addicts!  The Fall shows have finally come back to us and we need a new thread to track and discuss them all.  That's what we'll be doing here until we get back into regular recapping mode.  Walking Dead will resume later next month, so then we'll get back into weekly recaps and discussion threads.

See you in the comments!

TV Discussion: Summer of 2016

Hello everyone.  This is our regular place to discuss non-recapped shows.  For the summer I usually just put one post up.  If the comments get high, I will start another one.  See you in the comments!

Game of Thrones: Season 6 Episode 10 - The Winds of Winter

Hello friends and welcome to our discussion of the season 6 finale of Game of Thrones!  Wow.  What a season and what a final 2 episodes directed by Miguel Sapochnik (director of last season's Hardhome).  I don't now where this guy came from, but they should definitely get him back.   We can nitpick certain scenes and directions of the show, but with a 10.0 rating on IMDB for both episodes he must be doing something right.  And I guess we can credit Benioff and Weiss too a little bit!  Long held book theories were confirmed (at least for the show and most likely for the book), somewhat shocking events took place, there were emotional moments throughout and it was nail biting all the way to the end.  This season may have its detractors, but for not having as much of a blueprint to follow I think it was pretty fantastic.  I do question how different the book will go for certain stories (after this episode especially I imagine significantly different), but with the show trying to wrap up the story they have to make certain key decisions.  Let's discuss!

Game of Thrones: Season 6 Episode 9 - Battle of the Bastards

Hello everyone and welcome to our Game of Thrones coverage for season 6.  Put another episode 9 in the history books folks.  This one was pretty darned amazing.  It's easy to tell that HBO pulled out their wallet for this one allowing the most impressive battle imagery ever seen on TV to take place.  The episode was fantastic.  I do have a few nitpicks to address that the fandom has been discussing this season, but it doesn't take away from the visually impressive spectacle that was accomplished.  Let's dive in!

Game of Thrones: Season 6 Episode 8 - No One

Hello friends and welcome back to our Game of Thrones discussion.  This episode wrapped up some of our season plots while probably moving things into place for the finale for others.  If I had to guess I would say we're getting a single storyline next weekend but I do not know that for sure.  There were some fantastic moments in this episode and we'll discuss them all.

A quick word on book spoilers:  I haven't really had to mention this too much this season, but with this episode I feel a little more obligated.  I have read all of the books and a couple storylines have been revisiting plots from previous books.  I will only discuss what has been revealed from the book plots (calling out show differences along the way) and try my best to keep from spoiling potential future stories they may be setting up.  As always, we may dive into book discussion in the comments, but they will be noted as **Book Discussion** prior to the commentary.

Let's dive in!

Game of Thrones: Season 6 Episode 7 - The Broken Man

Hello friends and welcome back!  These seasons always seem to go fast don't they? We're 7 episodes into the 6th season now and things are getting pretty intense (as if they ever aren't)!  Lots of setup in this episode for which I have to imagine will be a pretty insane 3 episode final stretch.  Let's dive into the discussion.

Game of Thrones: Season 6 Episode 6 - Blood of My Blood (Discussion)

Happy Memorial Day everyone!  I remember way back in time when Game of Thrones would take the weekend off to preserve the impact of important episodes such as ones that portrayed "The Red Wedding".  Here we are a few years later and the holiday weekend is "just another weekend".  In reality, of course, we all probably had plans over the weekend that are of a traditional sort.  That certainly is the case for me so I did not have time to recap the episode this week let alone probably even watch Sunday night!

So, we will just have an informal discussion about the episode here when we all get the chance to watch the episode.   Hope you all enjoyed your weekend, hope you forgive me for not having my usual ramblings and I'll see you next week!

Game of Thrones: Season 6 Episode 5 - The Door

Hello friends and welcome back to our Game of Thrones coverage.  Wow!!  What an episode!  These big ones always seem to happen when I'm out of town and even more limited with time.  But I'm going to jot some thoughts on the key points down and then open the floor for discussion! Let's dive in.

Game of Thrones: Season 6 Episode 4 - Book of the Stranger

Hello everyone and welcome back to our Game of Thrones season 6 discussion.  Another solid effort for the show reaching past the novels for a majority of the episode.  We are getting a clearer picture of where things are headed this season and, for some storylines, even possibly further than that.  I'm short for time this week so let's dive right in!

Game of Thrones: Season 6 Episode 3 - Oathbreaker

Hello friends and welcome back to our Game of Thrones season 6 coverage.  Wow, this episode was fantastic.  While charting into unknown territory, this season is also exploring stories I wasn't sure would ever be covered on the show but have been theorized to be vital to the book saga.  We'll get into it all below.

Brief warning on spoilers as always.  I have read the 5 books in the Song of Ice and Fire (and anxiously awaiting the 6th).  While the show has technically passed the books in the timeline there still are some plots that are being adapted from the books in one form or another.  So, I will only address these plots up to the point they have been covered on the show.  In those cases I may discuss differences from book to show.  In comments I ask that any time you want to get into Book Discussion to precede the comment with a "BOOK SPOILER/DISCUSSION" warning.

And with that let's dive in!

Game of Thrones: Season 6 Episode 2 - Home

Hello everyone and welcome back to our Game of Thrones discussion.  This is the episode that we've been waiting for folks.  Payoff after months and years of speculation.  We'll get into the details below, but let's just say we all kind of figured this is how things would play out.  That didn't change the effect of the episode though.  There was lots of plot movement beyond the books in this episode, but we did return to one book plot that occurred from Clash of Kings through A Dance With Dragons (books 2-5), and there was much guessing that this would happen this season.

So with that, I will give my usual warning on spoilers.  I have read all 5 of the books and a couple released chapters of Winds of Winter (book 6), but I'm well practiced at not spoiling plot points that have yet to come on the show.  Once they do occur on the show I do seize the opportunity to point out differences/similarities between the 2.  If I'm too tempted to dive into book discussion I will always label this in the post or in comments (and encourage everyone else to do the same) as BOOK SPOILERS.

With that said, let's dive in!

Game of Thrones: Season 6 Episode 1 - The Red Woman

Hello friends.  It's been a long wait, but we're back!  Game of Thrones has returned and in fine form.  WOW.  I've been on the "I've read the books" side of the fence for so long now that watching this episode without any clue what was coming next was a new and intense experience!  For season kickoff episodes this one seemed to pack more punch than usual.  It certainly was a setup episode for the season, but it was a thrilling ride from storyline to storyline.

I usually take time to give my disclaimer that while I have book knowledge I will not spoil anything that hasn't occurred on the show yet.  It really doesn't apply this week as we are into uncharted territory.  However, it may still apply this season from time to time based on storylines they could still cover in one way or another.  But, for now let's dive in and discuss the highlights from each storyline they covered this week.

The Walking Dead: Season 6 Episode 16 - Last Day on Earth

Hello everyone!  We've finally reached the end of season 6.  From the reaction I've seen so far, there are some justifiably angry fans for how things were left.  I can totally understand that mindset and I might even be halfway inclined to join that group.  But, it's hard to bash the show too much because it did deliver well on introducing a new pivotal character and tearing down the confidence of one character we've been following for 6 seasons.  For that, I say WOW!  We can talk through the pros and cons below of their finale approach.  Overall though, I'd say season 6 was a huge success.  Let's do this!

The Walking Dead: Season 6 Episode 15 - East (Discussion)

Hello everyone and welcome back to our discussion of The Walking Dead!  Happy Easter for everyone who celebrates.  My family certainly celebrated until the late hours of the night.  I was able to swing WATCHING the episode at the very least, but I don't feel my attention to detail was at my all time best.  (Sometimes the back of my eyelids got that treatment!)  So, this happens at least once per half season and I warned about it this time.  We'll just have a discussion post instead of a recap.  That said, I do have a couple comments to make and will make that after the click!

The Walking Dead: Season 6 Episode 14 - Twice as Far

Hello everyone and welcome back!  With 3 episodes left in season 6 of The Walking Dead I was a bit surprised how this episode felt like a "moving the pieces into place" episode for most of the time.  I tend to forget that things can change at the drop of an arrow.  WOW, that episode was nuts!  Maybe ALMOST as nuts as my personal experience trying to watch the episode!  I'll spare you the details and just say that it was really late by the time we finished.  I say this all the time, but this recap will be very brief and we can continue the discussion in the comments!  Let's dive in.

The Walking Dead: Season 6 Episode 13 - The Same Boat

Hello everyone and welcome back to our continuing discussion of The Walking Dead season 6!  We are inching closer and closer to the introduction of Negan and the intensity is building more with each episode.  This one was an episode driven by female characters on both sides and it was a nail-biter!  Let's dive in:

The Walking Dead: Season 6 Episode 12 - Not Tomorrow Yet

Hello friends of The Walking Dead!  Season 6 continues on and is getting more and more intense this week.  The war against Negan has begun and Team Rick has struck first.  The Alexandrians faced a tough decision and all but one reluctantly agreed to take the fight to them.  The results were pretty horrific to watch, but made for good television! Let's dive into the discussion.

The Walking Dead: Season 6 Episode 11 - Knots Untie

Hello everyone and welcome back to our season 6 coverage of The Walking Dead!  This episode was a decent setup episode for future conflicts as well as a great world building episode.  There's tons of stuff that could be covered and we can surely dive into it in comments.  I'm definitely experiencing a shortage of available time to get full-fledged recaps out at the moment, but I'll still offer a few tidbits and then open the floor for discussion.  Hopefully, no one minds too much!  Let's dive in.

The Walking Dead: Season 6 Episode 10 - The New World

Hello friends and welcome back for our ongoing Season 6 discussion of The Walking Dead!  I loved last night's episode and would love to dissect every detail ahead of our discussion.  However, my children had other plans for us on Sunday evening, which as we know is more often the case these days for me.  I'm not complaining, nor will I ever be!  So, this post is going to be super brief and then we will continue the discussion as we always do in the comments!

The Walking Dead: Season 6 Episode 9 - No Way Out

Hello fellow Walker fanatics!  WOW.  Everyone involved has been hyping this episode up since the mid-season finale, but I don't know if anyone was prepared for that!  They referred to it on Talking Dead as one of the best Walking Dead episodes ever, and I don't think it's an exaggeration.  We were on the edge of our seat the entire episode in the V household.  When you have a herd of walkers migrating through your town, you need to expect some casualties.  This episode did a really good job at making us feel like we were going to lose some of our favorites at any given moment.  And while one of the ones we did lose is shocking from a future storyline potential it seems the faves will live on for another day, but what they want through has changed them forever! Season 6 continues to impress for me.  Not much else to say but to dive on in!
