TV Discussion: 11/29/2015 - 1/31/2016

Hello fellow TV Addicts!  This is our regular place for discussion of all non-recapped shows.  We'll keep this one up until Walking Dead resumes next year.  See you in the comments!

The Walking Dead: Season 6 Episode 8 - Start to Finish

Hello fellow walkers!  We've reached the mid-season finale of The Walking Dead and it was a pretty intense episode.  I will admit that it wasn't quite AS intense as I expected.  I thought Alexandria would be burnt to the ground by a fuel tanker by the end!  They took a different approach which was equally interesting and suspenseful.  It's been a long holiday weekend for me so this may not be the most comprehensive recap, but we'll make up for it in comments.  I'm just lucky that I was able to watch the episode the night it aired!  Let's dive in!

The Walking Dead: Season 6 Episode 7 - Heads Up

Hello fellow walkers!  Well, that was quite an episode!  Finally, all the storylines are converging to lead up to a climactic mid-season finale.  There's also been one lingering question that's been weighing on the viewers for several weeks and we finally got our answer.  I probably should've seen the end coming but it left my jaw dropped on the floor! Let's dive in and discuss it!

The Walking Dead: Season 6 Episode 6 - Always Accountable

Hello fellow walkers!  We're in the back half of the 1st half of season 6 of The Waking Dead.  We still have people unaccounted for and things are still intense!  This episode focused on Daryl, Abraham and Sasha's attempt to return back to Alexandria after luring half of the herd of walkers 20 miles away.  As you may have guessed, things didn't quite go as planned! It was another solid episode that leaves us with some new mysteries to solve and new villains to fear.  Let's dive in!

The Walking Dead: Season 6 Episode 5 - Now

Hello fellow walkers and welcome back to season 6 of The Walking Dead!  It was another intense episode last night.  But for Zombie Apocalypse standards, it was a pretty LOW KEY episode.  A "getting the pieces in place" episode if you will!  Still plenty went down in Alexandria worth discussing.  Let's dive in now!

The Walking Dead: Season 6 Episode 4 - Here's Not Here

Hello fellow walkers!  We continue which has been a tremendous first half of season 6.  If anyone watched the previews for this week it was fairly easy to determine we would not be getting a resolution to last week's ambiguous "death" scene.  Instead, we rewound time to see exactly what happened to Morgan since the Season 3 "Clear" episode (written by the now showrunner Scott Gimple).  We found out what turned him from crazed living/walker "clearer" to more of Batman's "no kill policy" against the living.   This episode (and this season so far) gets a trademark WOW rating from yours truly.  Let's dive into the recap!

The Walking Dead: Season 6 Episode 3 - Thank You (Discussion)

Hello fellow walkers!  I'm going to guess last night's episode was pretty intense, but unfortunately due to unpredicted conflicts I was unable to watch.  So, I could try to recap the episode but it might not sync up too well with what everyone experienced!   Per my usual protocol, I am still going to post this discussion thread for anyone to kick off the discussion.  And I'll be sure to join in as soon as I watch (most likely tonight).  Sorry about the lack of recap, but I'll see you in the comments!

The Walking Dead: Season 6 Episode 2 - JSS

Hello fellow Walking Dead heads!  Welcome back to season 6 which has not been easing us into anything. Let me get this out of the way.  WOW! That was one intense episode considering the majority of the A-Team was out herding 80,000 walkers away from Alexandria.  Of course this episode answered the big question from last week's episode.  Who was blowing that horn and how did it happen?  This will probably be a quick recap as I've got a busy schedule but I want to be clear that I loved this episode!  Let's dive in.

The Walking Dead: Season 6 Episode 1 - First Time Again

Hello fellow survivors of the zombie apocalypse and welcome back after a long hiatus!  The Walking Dead has returned for its 6th season and it did so with a giant episode.  There was so much going on in this premiere, but they found a way to convey it to the audience in a very effective manner.  The show fast forwarded to us being knee deep in the next walker problem that the town of Alexandria was facing, but we flashed back to the aftermath of last year's finale.  Each black and white flashback informed the next part of the present day effort that was going on.  It was effective in having us learn a lot of new characters in a short period of time and in showing the growing pains of the Alexandrians and Team Rick getting over their issues to work together.  Let's not delay this any further.  Time to dive in!

Summer 2015 TV Discussion

Hello everyone!  As usual, this will be our place to talk ALL TV during the summer.  If the comments thread gets too long, I'll post a new one later on.  See you in the comments!

Game of Thrones: Season 5 Episode 10 - Mother's Mercy

Hello everyone and welcome to our final installment of Game of Thrones recapping for season 5!  And WOW, can you believe what just went down in that episode?  Thrilling from start to finish.  A mix of plots that have yet to happen in the books and what definitely happened.  We have now chronologically reached the point where the TV Show has caught up to where A Dance With Dragons  (book 5) ends.  There are some plot lines that haven't been covered yet that seem like they may still happen next year, but for the most part we are in uncharted territory!   One has to assume George R. R. Martin is almost finished with The Winds of Winter, but he has long since stopped updating fans on when he thinks he'll release a book due to not making those deadlines in the past.  Most betting fans would bet he'll release it RIGHT BEFORE season 6 airs to optimize sales.  We shall see.

But, this season certainly was a rollercoaster ride of emotions and it ended on a pretty shocking note (even if it was heavily foreshadowed throughout the season).   A couple of us book readers have been debating how the scene would go down and where exactly it would end all season long (feel free to go back and read those spoiler discussions in all of the comments.  We'll talk a little more in this recap about the implications and what book fans have theorized about.

A minor note on Spoiler Warnings.  I usually freely discuss anything that has been covered in the books and try to avoid spoiling anything yet to come.  Now, that we're caught up we're in a huge grey area of what may or may not be a spoiler!  I will still use caution on discussing things that might still happen in the show.  Let's do this!

Game of Thrones: Season 5 Episode 9 - The Dance of Dragons

Hello everyone and welcome to another episode 9 of Game of Thrones!  I apologize once again for being unavailable the past couple of weeks to do a proper recap.  I had no idea when that happened that we'd be getting the amazing episode we got last week!  And we still had plenty of discussion about it!  With that said, I always suspected episode 9 would contain some form of the amazing conclusion we got this week.  And it was nothing short of spectacular!  The other moments in the episode were just as important and one in particular will probably ruffle a few feathers.  Let's dive in!

As per usual, I have read all of the books, which is becoming less and less important as we near the end of the written material.  In terms of spoilers, I try to avoid spoiling book plots that have not occurred to my best knowledge in the show.  Once they do occur, I speak to the differences.  In the comments book readers should note ***SPOILER*** or *** BOOK DISCUSSION**** if they are about to post something about book plots yet to happen.

Here we go!

Hello everyone and welcome back to our Game of Thrones season 5 coverage!  As noted, this is the 2nd week in a row where I have a conflict with doing a full scale recap.  I will be back in full force next week for the remaining 2 episodes of the season.  But, we can still discuss the episode below and I'll be sure to add my thoughts as soon as I can.  Thanks for your understanding and see you in the comments!

Game of Thrones: Season 5 Episode 7 - The Gift (Discussion)

Hello friends and Happy Memorial Day!  Like most Americans, I took advantage of the holiday weekend and spent time with family and friends.  Unfortunately, I do not have time to do a full recap for this episode.  But, I definitely think we'll have stuff to discuss in the comments at some point.  So, feel free to dive right in and add your thoughts!

I mentioned this on the last recap, but I will also be out of town next weekend and it's not looking likely for a recap  next week either.  But, be assured that I will plan on getting something written for the final 2 episodes of the season!

Sorry for the bad timing and I thank you for understanding.  See you in the comments!

UPDATE: I've added my thoughts on the episode in the first 2 comments.

Game of Thrones: Season 5 Episode 6 - Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken

Hello all and welcome back to our Game of Thrones discussion.  A discussion each week becoming more and more about a television show and less and less about a book series the show was based on!  Yes, I exaggerate.  But, the media and some hardcore fans would make you think that is the case.  This week included a scene that book fans were worried was going to happen.  We'll discuss it when we get there.  While it is a little shocking due to the characters involved, it still does seem to me that the showrunners are being completely faithful to the books and that this is still one of the best adaptations on television.  Last night's episode as a whole was fantastic yet again and directly included some of the best highlights from George R. R. Martin's latest 2 books (I know using the word "latest" is pretty comical).  Let's dive right into the recap.

Spoiler Disclaimer:  I've read the books and will discuss book vs. show if the show covers the plot.  If I ever bring up a clear cut spoiler in the recap it will be indicated as so.  Otherwise, I usually save them for the comments and will clearly indicate my comments as "SPOILER" or "BOOK DISCUSSION" and encourage anyone else to do the same!

Game of Thrones: Season 5 Episode 5 - Kill the Boy

Hello all and welcome back to our Game of Thrones Season 5 coverage!  We continue to mix in a little bit of the book with brand new territory for the show.  And it continues to be interesting to me!  There are plenty of different opinions floating around the world with TV Only Viewers and Book Readers on the season.  I've mentioned various times that I'm not a book purist by any means, especially when it comes to the most recent 2 books which we're covering now.  I think the show runners are doing their best to be faithful to George R. R. Martin's work, while making the series as a whole still consumable for television audiences.  They're certainly keeping us on our toes and I'm interested to see where they go.

I'll still keep our standard disclaimer here that I have read all of the Song of Ice and Fire books that are currently released.  I will only compare to the books when it's clear that we've covered it on the show or will not be covering it.  In the comments, any book spoilers/speculation should be noted as such before commenting.

With that, let's dive in!

Hello fellow TV addicts! This is our weekly place to discuss all non-recapped TV. See you in the comments!

Game of Thrones: Season 5 Episode 4 - Sons of the Harpy

Hello fellow Game of Thrones fans.  What a crazy episode.  Some pretty significant changes from George R.R. Martin's Bible, but they also mixed in some REALLY IMPORTANT nuggets that book fans have been waiting for since season 1!  So, all in all, this was a fantastic episode of the show.  I'm really loving this season, as I do every year.  But, I think the consolidation of these 2 books is really liberating the writers to take some interesting chances.  They're paying off for the most part.  Maybe not everything but we'll get to that.

Weekly Spoiler Warning - Yes, I've read the books but I'm very careful on what I reveal.  If the show covers plot covered in the books, I'll discuss it and the differences.  If it's pretty clear the show will NOT cover something from the books, I may discuss that as well.  In the comments section everyone is very careful to label SPOILERS/BOOK DISCUSSION before posting about future book topics.  This disclaimer probably won't be needed next season, but we'll see if GRRM gets that 6th book out!

In the meantime, let's dive in!

Game of Thrones: Season 5 Episode 3 - High Sparrow

Hello friends and welcome back to our Game of Thrones coverage!  We are 3 episodes into season 5. Many book readers have coined a few phrases to explain what is happening to the story.  My favorites are "Efficiency is Coming!"  and "Convergence is coming!"  They certainly are flying through the material of A Feast for Crows and A Dance With Dragons (which mostly happen in parallel timelines) but with good reason.  There are a lot of new characters introduced and stories that seemingly go nowhere (or nowhere that couldn't have gone somewhere else more quickly).  The show is doing everyone a favor by taking the best parts of the books and moving the story forward. If you read EW.com after the episode last night, you would think the unthinkable has happened to the story of Ice and Fire.  Maybe, I'm a little less surprised, because we kind of figured out a certain storyline in our "spoiler labeled" comments last week!  We'll get to it in the recap, but basically, there are 3 major character stories that have altered storylines in the show compared to the books.  But all 3 of those characters are moving towards a story that IS in the books (that may have involved other "NEW" characters).   Hence...CONVERGENCE, EFFICIENCY!

Translation: I'm still loving the show and I think the showrunners have the best interests of the plot in mind while still being faithful to GRRM's story.  And this episode was easily my favorite of the 3 so far.  Every scene had me on the edge of my seat and I loved the transitions from setting to setting.  Cersei was talking about Littlefinger?  We cut to Littlefinger.  Brienne was talking about vengeance on Stannis, we cut to the Wall on Stannis.   It was a very seamless way to tie the whole episode and story together.

Book Knowledge Disclaimer: As mentioned above, we do dive into the books here but not past what we've already covered from a TV show perspective.  So, I'll discuss differences (where I remember) in the recap.  In the comments, if we dive into book theories, we will note them as such at the beginning of the comment and request anyone else do the same!   With all of that said, let's dive in!

Game of Thrones: Season 5 Episode 2 - The House of Black and White

Welcome back everyone!  It's time for another helping of Game of Thrones discussion.  We continued most storylines from episode 1 while adding in a couple more with Arya and the Dorne plots.  A lot of the episode seemed to center around leadership and the consequences of decisions made as leaders.     And just for the record, we continue distance ourselves even more so from the books with certain plots.  But nothing I've seen so far has been a bad decision or change.  And the theme of the books remains intact.  It makes sense that they'd want to stick with the characters already established.  I remember reading A Feast for Crows and A Dance With Dragons and getting to these chapters with NEW centric characters and just looking forward to getting back to the characters I wanted to read about.  That's basically what the show is doing.  Continuing those character stories and weaving in plots from the other storylines to the characters we know where necessary.

Speaking of the books, I'll continue to discuss differences to the book as they occur on the show but not before.  If it's questionable I'll be as vague as possible (That applies this week).  And of course, we will maintain our "SPOILER WARNINGS" in the comments.  If you want to talk about the book make sure it's clear at the start of your comment!

With that, let's dive in!

Game of Thrones: Season 5 Episode 1 - The Wars to Come

Hello friends from the Earthly realm and welcome back (finally) to the drama in Westeros and Essos! Game of Thrones season 5 is here and it's awesome!  So, we are now into books 4 and 5 of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire.  The producers have made it no secret that they intend to keep plowing forward with plot regardless of George's progress on the books.  So, the popular guess is that this season will include most or ALL of both of George's latest books.  The stories, for the most part, run in parallel in both books chronologically with book 5 A Dance With Dragons stretching the timeline further in the 2nd half of the book.  It also has been implied that this season will differ THE MOST from the books, which has book fans all in an uproar.   Usually, I've been one to champion the differences between Book and Show.   They seem to always make the right choice and keep the spirit of the books alive.   Some of the things I assumed would be cut OUT of the show are pretty much what they're cutting out.  (with the exception of one large twist that could've been at the end of last season and is probably cut out entirely)   All of that said, the majority of the season premiere played out almost exactly like it did in the books with the exception of a few different scenes.  And, based on some interviews, the final scene seems like it may have a different final outcome than the written word!

Okay, I know.  Half of the readers of that first paragraph probably just rolled their eyes and thought to themselves (maybe even exclaimed outloud), "Oh great.  Here we go again.  Another book reader endlessly comparing to the books!"   For anyone that has read my recaps before, I do pretty well at only comparing to the books when it's clear that the show already covered it or has no plans in covering it.  Even so, I'm pretty good with spoiler warnings and splitting out any strictly book discussions for the bottom of the recap.  The same goes for the comments.  If you're going to post about stuff to come from the books, PLEASE INDICATE SPOILER in your comment!

All of that said, I think we're ready to dive on into the season 5 premiere!  Let's do it!

Wow.  That escalated quickly!  Welcome back to the waning hours of The Walking Dead Season 5!  What a crazy episode!  We knew it wouldn't be long before tensions rose in Alexandria.  And the events that unfolded over this hour will probably play a major part in it!  Let's dive in.

The Walking Dead: Season 5 Episode 13 - Forget

Hello everyone and welcome back to The Walking Dead!  I'm really enjoying this new Alexandria storyline.  It's a definite change of pace from the previous 4.5 seasons of the show.  Just seeing all of the people we've been following trying to fit in at a party is something I didn't envision ever seeing on this show and that made it work!  I guess the episode titles of last week and this week outline a pretty good theme of what we saw.  Last week was titled "remember" which basically showed our heroes reluctant to conform and fit in.  They didn't want to become weak.  This week we saw some people let their guard down a bit and show signs of "Forgetting".  Lots of observations for this episode.  I'll probably forget half of them so we'll rely on our comments discussion to make sure we get most! Let's dive in.

The Walking Dead: Season 5 Episode 12 - Remember

Hello everyone and welcome back to The Walking Dead.  We have arrived at the gated community of Alexandria.  There is electricity, there is running water, there are no walkers inside.  Show is over, right?  What could possibly go wrong!?  Well, we certainly found out where there is potential for conflict!  It was another great episode on a streak of great ones.  Let's dive in and discuss.

The Walking Dead: Season 5 Episode 11 - The Distance

Hello everyone and welcome back for another helping of The Walking Dead!  And what an episode it was!  It feels like we're always asked to determine if someone is deserving of our trust.  But, this show sure nows how to amp up the intensity as if it's the first time we've been asked the question.  Maybe it's the weight of everything that has preceded it combined with the promises that these new characters provide.  Our heroes are at their wits end and are looking for any sliver of hope.  But, even when everything checks out, there are still questionable moments that still make us not trust.  Plus, it's easier for us not to trust knowing that it's a television show where there always has to be stakes to keep things interesting!  I doubt they'll show up at Alexandria and it'll be 5 seasons of ping pong tournaments until the viewers finally cry, "Uncle!"  Okay, enough rambling.  It was a great episode and let's dive in and discuss!

The Walking Dead: Season 5 Episode 10 - Them

Hello everyone and welcome back to The Walking Dead!  I haven't been checking the pulse on the inter webs, but I can imagine there might start being some complainers of the beginning of this 2nd half of the season.  We've had 2 fairly slow paced episodes in a row.  While they were slow, they've had their fair share of interesting character moments.  And they're doing a good job of showing the toll that this way of life could potentially take on a person, group of people, or civilization.  So, I'd probably chalk this episode up as "not my favorite" but probably a necessary building block towards what's ahead.  A well made episode of television, but probably not one I'm going to have a lot to discuss!  Let's dive in!

The Walking Dead: Season 5 Episode 9 - What Happened and What's Going On

We're back!  Welcome to season 5-B of the Walking Dead.  They didn't waste any time upsetting us and eliminating some beloved characters from our lives.  But, they certainly upped the creepy vibe with the directing style and ghostly visions on this one.  It's nice to see they're expanding the brand and trying different things.  Anyway, I'm short for time this morning, so let's not waste any time diving into the details!
