24 - (Don't read if you haven't watched!) Crazy episode last night. Can't believe it was the 200th episode of 24 all these years later. They finally got it. lol

President Heller went out on one helluva swan song. Up until the last minute I figured something would prevent it, but they went ahead and blew him up at Wembley! lol RIP Heller. (we think)

Of course, it doesn't look like Catelyn Stark is actually going to destroy her drones either, so was his sacrifice worth it? Remains to be seen.

But once again, it seems like this time jump still isn't happening and now we're 8 hours in.

I forget if I shared an interview with Howard Gordon or not, but he definitely said the time jump is coming. They didn't specify if there would be multiple...but he said he was sworn to secrecy on when and how it would happen. It has to be happening soon!

Here's a recap of the ep:
http://tvline.com/2014/06/16/24-live-another-day-recap-president-heller-killed/#

And here's that interview on the time jump:
http://tvline.com/2014/06/13/24-live-another-day-time-jump-kate-replace-jack/#

(btw...I'm a huge fan of Yvonne Strahovski so if she wants to take the reins as Kate Morgan in a 24 spinoff? I'm in! But I'd certainly miss Jack Bauer.)

Orphan Black - Still haven't gotten to this. Treadmill busted last week so I've had to actually go the the gym. lol I'll watch it eventually!

Will probably be late on watching True Blood's premiere too.

Still haven't started Orange....ugh! I thought this was summer! lol

MJ said...

Orange - almost done.

Gracelend - watched season 1 lst year and liked it. Just rewatched finale to get me back into it for S2 and you would not believe who was in it last year - the Red Viper ! LOL

Fringe - we kept seeing the showrunner's name Alex Kurtzman and could not figure where we knew him. Sleepy Hollow ! And of course your school mate does the music.

EW has a Sleepy article
http://insidetv.ew.com/2014/06/16/sleepy-hollow-finale-reveal-alex-kurtzman/

Fargo - a few behind on this one now.

MJ said...

Oh - no 24 yet so thanks for your warning ! LOL

Oh - no 24 yet so thanks for your warning ! LOL

Mike V. said...

24 - No prob!

Fringe - I think he may have written the theme and some of the tunes, but I don't think he scored every season. (Giacchino)..but he's certainy worked on all Abrams movies (except Star Wars, that stays with Williams)...and LOST! Kurtzman...yeah he's an Abrams guy too. He's involved with Sleepy, helped create fringe...and has writing credits on the Star Treks. I think Kurtzman and Bob Orci's name shows up on a lot of JJ's stuff and their own stuff. lol

I saw the Sleepy article too! Good stuff.

Fargo - Haven't watched any of it yet! :-( I've heard it's awesome though.

MJ said...

24 - watched last night. I def thought that Jack would save the pres at the last minute and I wasn't going to be happy. I was pleasantly surprised they went for it and killed Heller ! I don't watch the previews but I'm guessing Catelyn will want to honor her bargain but her son will somehow stop that.

Crazy - but it's only just last night that I realized Kate's last name if Morgan - just like Dexter. LOL 200th ep ! I had not realized that. Hoping this show comes back again after this mini run. With the Pres dead have to assume some folks will go back to the USA - and that might be our time jump as we'd hypothesized.

Fargo has been great. Will watch the final 2 as a marathon tonight.

MJ said...

Longmire - you up to date Richard ? Very sad to hear all the illegal medical stuff done back in the day to those women. Glad Standing Bear at least got out on bail. but Walt judging the indian Miss Cheyenne ? too funny

MJ said...

Last Ship - any one going to check it out besides me ?

Also will look at Dominion as well.

Mike V. said...

24 - It wasn't clear from the previews....but that sounds about right with your guess. lol Yeah...I had that Morgan realization recently too. lol We'll see about that time jump. As I mentioned before..if it does go to the US...then I'll be curious what time will be on the clocks!!

I don't think I've even heard of Last Ship or Dominion...what channels are they coming on? I'm sure I could look it up.

Definitely will watch The Leftovers for the concept and duh...DAMON LINDELOF!

Finished TVD last night. It was a bizarre season. But, I guess enjoyable. Not much teen dramay stuff this season, but there was a little bit. lol We'll probably start ORANGE tonight.

Anonymous said...

24, read comments, will watch tonight. Glad they mixed it up with someone important dieing. Maybe they'll blame it on Jack somehow--lol.

Longmire--watched and yes it was a great ep. Glad Standing Bear was released too, but suspect he may skip bail given how Cady's boyfriend was doing it for her and Walt wasn't going to let him go back no matter what?

Yea, I had heard about the sterilization since I lived in OK at one time and am part Cherokee(small part) but I was always told that wasn't true. Alcohol and poverty were a big problem. Now they have casinos which helps take care of the poverty but it brings in other stuff. That woman who killed the sons was off her rocker though.

24, pretty good watched at lunch. A few SWAGS/predictions--lol.
1. Chloe will figure out the code and the terrorist will take some hits.
2. The VP should be but probably won't be sworn in within the next hour or two as the new POTUS.
3. The time shift will be the last hour and involve Jack's future/pardon, etc.
4. CIA traitor will be found out, don't know if Jordan will live. Kind of crazy that Chloe's boss is working with CIA guy.

Richard

Mike V. said...

24 - I assumed the same on #1 lol Interesting idea on #3. I could've sworn their plan was to skip multiple sets of hours during the day...but maybe that was just in concept. I guess they could go 11 straight hours then skip 12.

PJ Carz said...

MJ and Mike V - I plan to watch the Last Ship, Sunday 6/22 8 central on TNT. If the following link works, check it out. http://www.thelastshiptnt.com/

Mike V. said...

Thanks for the heads up PJ (and MJ)! I hadn't really even heard of this. But, I'm out of the loop on TNT shows. lol

I'll set the TiVo. I'll try to get to it. :)

PJ Carz said...

MJ and Richard - Thanks for mentioning Longmire. I had heard that it was worth a look, but forgot about it till it was mentioned here today. So I watched my first ep online, which was 3 of 3, and we'll put it on our binge list and catch up. This group does good TV!

PJ Carz said...

MJ - I hadn't heard of Dominion; thanks for the info. I looked at a trailer for it and I laughed out loud three times. Not at funny parts, but funny in a B-movie type way. (When the bad angels flap their wings, who can't be reminded of the flying monkeys of Oz.) Having said that, I'm going to watch it tonight because, hey, summer. 8-9:30 central Syfy. Might record Rookie Blue, on at the same time.

Anonymous said...

I DVRd Dominion, haven't seen it. Saw Defiance premier. I seriously wonder how that got renewed and yet Revolution didn't. I mean they even have their own version of Charlie--lol. I won't be watching this, was hoping for improvement.

I had been trying to watch Continuum but with the multiple Alex's, etc and a timeline/timetravel that helps them do what they want with the plotline, I gave up--lol. I think this was once a decent show that has become way to complicated.

Richard

Mike V. said...

Richard, do you even have to ask? It's cable vs. broadcast network! And it's on SyFy isn't it? So it's right in their specific niche where as Revolution was on a network budget and not pulling in the numbers.

But yeah, I gave up on Defiance after the pilot episode. lol

Anonymous said...

LOL,LOL,LOL--makes me question myself watching SyFy

MJ said...

24 - not clear if the CIA mole guy knows who he is dealing with though. Chloe's 'boss' is a famous cyber criminal I think. hey - the time skip could be the very end of the series and flash forward to show the next day starting and a new threat - telling us we have a chance of having a new season ! LOL

Dominion on SyFy and Last Ship on TNT - right with my summer fave Falling Skies.

Dominion - I have it taped and haven't seen it yet. Figured it would be good in that B-movie SyFy way. It was a movie first and that movie was fairly bad so figured I'd just look at it.

Defiance - I taped it - havent' decided to watch or not.

Continuum - I also gave up with the multiple Alexs and Kira and timelines. My husband has stayed with it though.

SyFy Channel - I only admit to a select few that I sometimes do watch !

Have a good weekend everyone

Mike V. said...

24 - Interesting idea on the time jump but that would break the format!! But I like the concept. lol Very quantum leapish!!

BSG was the best thing that ever aired on "SCI FI" before they changed the name. lol

STAR WARS - Episode 8 has an awesome writer/director in Rian Johnson. He did some key episodes of Breaking Bad including one of the best episodes of television ever in OZYMANDIUS.....and He wrote/directed Looper. I think I heard a podcast with this guy before. He is a master at the craft...and will do great things for Star Wars. Rumor has it he's on for EP IX too!

LastShip--For me, 6 out of 10. Rhona seems to have the same personality as other roles. Adam too. Don't know the ships Captain actor?? But, not a bad cast really. The refueling and refitting with food was weak for 200plus crewmen. The thing that got me the worst was not investigating Florida when ordered to go there. They could have sent out a scout party with a small craft or even safer, use the helicopter. For one of the major reasons the crew is doing what the show is all about, and yet not checking things out was very weak. Since it's airborne, they really need to develop a detector. Maybe a long shot, but maybe the dog will figure in somehow?

But, to finish on a high note, pretty good for summer TV. We know the virus was likely weaponized, maybe by breakaway Russians. Interesting to have Russians as bad guys vs Muslim terrorists??

The Capt's wife and Dad seem like they will have more screen time, particularly with his Dad having serious connections at the pentagon.

Sounds good about StarWars. BTW, Harrison broke his leg, not hurt his ankle--more serious. I agree with you that he likes to do his stunts sometimes.

Richard

Mike V. said...

Last Ship - Recorded, didn't watch. But I assumed I would rate it the same. lol I may watch it at some point in the next couple days because I have to wait for my wife to watch everything else! lol

So with that, it might be a few days before I watch 24 and True Blood this week. Family is away visiting family while I'm stuck here working!

Orphan Black - I did watch this though! Pretty good finale, and excellent sophomore season! I wondered when they were going to introduce male clones. Never would've expected that particular actor though. But, based on the interviews with Tatiana and the producers, they're pretty impressed with his versatility! Can't believe they didn't cure or kill Cosima. I thought for a second that she was going to die. At least there's a hope for her in that book that Kira had from what's his face. It seemed pretty obvious to me he was going to poison himself with that tea with the way they were focusing on him taking that sip...and that he brought is own. lol And of course...that dance scene...that was pretty impressive considering it was 1 actress playing 4 parts! Plus Fe and Kira. Even more impressive the Sarah and Cosima hand holding scene in the bed. I might have seen some fingers slipping right through the other hand...but it still looked pretty solid for the most part (pun intended?). Good stuff.

Star Wars - Yeah I heard about Harrison...that's pretty rough...apparently RDJ broke his leg or something like that on the set of Iron Man 3 and that stayed on schedule too. Granted, Harrison is 71 but the man is in good shape! He'll be fine. Not sure if it was fake or not, but he seems to have a good sense of humor about it. There was a picture making rounds on facebook (maybe even EW) with Harrison holding a sign that said "Can make the kessel run in less than ## Parsecs...Can't use a door." LOL The biggest thing I took from the photo, besides the great joke was that he was sporting a bushy goatee....Is Han Solo going to be bearded!?! lol I assumed Luke would be, didn't think about Han. lol

PJ Carz said...

Richard - I agree on all counts about Last Ship. FYI, the Captain is played by Eric Dane, who played Dr. Mark Stone (aka McSteamy) on Grey's Anatomy for 7 years. He had darker hair then.

Mike V. said...

I unfortunately can say I know Eric Dane from Grey's as well. Though I stopped watching years ago! lol I don't know what's worse, admitting to watching Grey's Anatomy or knowing that he also played a minor mutant role in Xmen-3...easily the worst of the X-men movies! lol (granted, I haven't seen the new one yet but I've heard good things. Plus, it's Bryan Singer who did X1 and X2, how could it be bad??)

mj said...

Lol on Quantum Leap! Prob right about BSG - but scicfi also had my big fave Babylon 5. Also aired SG1 when fox quit the show

Last ship - couldn't get it in as had TB finaleband premier as well as Falling Skies finale/premier.

Orphan Black - never got to it. Def tonight.

mj said...

Tyrant premiers tomorrow on FX. Not sure what its about - ads have been very vague

Anonymous said...

Last Ship--one thing my son was wondering about is how long can the plotline of Last Ship really last? He doesn't see it being for several seasons.

Richard

Mike V. said...

LAST SHIP - I have no idea...but I used to wonder how LOST could be anything more than a miniseries and they totally proved me wrong! lol

Tyrant - Yeah, promos haven't interested me. I have a feeling this one may tank! lol But I could be wrong. I thought Sleepy Hollow would tank too. :)

PJ Carz said...

Mike V - Nah, it's not too embarrassing to admit to having watched Grey's. I watched in Season 3 when K. Heigl did brain surgery with a tire tool. All the old cast was still there then, including the disgraced I. Washington. Guilty pleasure of watching that show then.

PJ Carz said...

Mike V - Except for keeping company with this group, I have questionable taste. I don't remember Eric Dane from X-men. Might not have seen it. But to my shame, I do remember him from his small part in Burlesque. I love all things Cher, so give me a pass on this one, ok?

Mike V. said...

@PJ - Touche' I'm all for a good guilty pleasure show. It's not a very big secret that I've been blogging Idol on a different site for the past 10 years. lol

Grey's was actually a really good show back in the day. Tough to remember that sometimes!

And don't worry about Burlesque. I think i recall i "wanted" to see that, but never did.

Yeah X-Men: The Last Stand...directed by the universally reknowned movie hack -> Brett Ratner. Synger went on to direct Superman Returns and left the X-Franchise in Brett's hands. The results were mediocre at best! But there were several of people in that movie "before they were stars"...because there were like 100 mutants in that final battle. Ellen Page plays Kitty Pryde (I think she reprises the role in the new one)....and Eric Dane plays MULTIPLE MAN. Don't worry, I had to look that up. lol

So, as promised I have not watched 24 or True Blood yet. I heard there was an impressive 10 minute sequence in 24 though. I'm itching to watch it!! But, I promised I'd wait. lol

Meanwhile I was able to watch ALL of the I Love the 2000s episodes on VH1. Speaking of guilty pleasures. lol

Anonymous said...

Dominion--Finally watched last night. I kind of didn't want to like this show, but kind of ended up liking it--lol. SYFY showing more skin is not something I'm crazy about, but it wasn't as bad as rating could allow. Actors were ok, some good. Not sure I like the actor playing Michael or Alex. Already showed one of the traitors. Some problems with basic premise of show really makes it a far flung fantasy but tying in some real names to try and bring credibility.

I will watch again. I like the old LOST actor quite a bit and his daughter seems to be ok. It seems it could be a show more about character development, struggles, etc than special effects which honestly, I may really like?

Richard

Mike V. said...

Dominion - Didn't even check it out and don't even know what it's about!

Didn't check out Tyrant on FX either (reviews didn't seem too positive)

I think I'm maxed out on shows right now and just enjoying my summer! lol

Anyway, speaking of LOST actors, I just happened to see some of the VH1 Top 20 countdown this week and noticed that WALT is in some kind of Boy Band duo now and has a hit single! I saw him in the video and was thinking...wait that can't be Walt, then I googled it and it absolutely is. Hysterical...but good for him I guess!

http://www.wearemkto.com/

Family is back home so we're gonna get back on track with 24, True Blood and finally start Orphan Black!

Anonymous said...

Great for family. Interesting about Walt deal.

It's worth recording the pilot of Dominion and screening to check out.

Longmire--another good ep, Walt's on the hunt now. Glad our old BSG girl is getting shut down by him and husband was just honest though. I would hate it if Walt and her got together. Branch is also on the hunt, but he just doesn't bring the status that Walt does.

Richard

Mike V. said...

Wow...I mixed up Orphan Black and Orange is the new Black (wonder why)...obviously I've already finished Orphan Black! lol

Okay, I'll think about it on Dominion. :)

MJ said...

OB - agree was an awesome season and finale. Def did not think that guy would be a clone either. Only regret that Tony wasn't in the finale - I liked him. Def a fab job with them all dancing - I even watched and they didn't pull that 'only see 1 face at a time' while dancing. We saw three faces at one point. Think Kira danced off by herself that whole time though. Loved how Tatiana had a different dance for each of them as well. Glad they did not kill Cosima - thought they would as well.

Fringe - well into season 2 - saw Ian (gay son) from Shameless as a kid. He was the kid who used mind control to force people to do what he wanted.

Dominion - I didn't hate it. But enough with the Roman theme ! What is that about ? I know they are in what was Vegas and are living in Caesars Palace but why are they all dressed like Romans back in the day ?? Doesn't this take place in the current time or future ?

24 - Daaaamn! They unkilled the Pres which made me unhappy but then Jack went and just threw Lady Catelyn out the window ! And yuck - Chloe kissed her creepy bad-guy boss !

Mike V. said...

Fringe - Nice! Never would've thought he was on that show.

24 - Finally watched! There were many theories out there that since there was no silent clock the President was still alive and Chloe may have done some hacking and trickery. I read about Lady Cat getting the axe. Too tough to stay away from that when watching 2 days later. lol Headlines everywhere with pictures. So now, the Russia Plot and the Benjamen Bratt plot take center stage. Looks like next week will still go to the next hour. So it looks like there will only be one time jump. So crazy! I think when they announced the mini-series they thought they might be able to jump around throughout the day but it didn't work out. But...it's a nice option in the future if they can! But 11 hours and then a 12 hour jump could work...and possibly serve as a cliffhanger for Jack's next adventure.

Recorded Dominion now so I'll try to catch up when I can. Treadmill is still out of commission so with going to the gym, my TV time is limited! :-(

OB - Kira was definitely dancing by herself. But, can't blame them for that! Yeah Tatiana deserves an Emmy for this show...I'll join the internet chatter on that. She does amazing work. Yeah..no Tony, "he" was interesting to say the least!

True Blood - Finally watched this too. Not a bad start to the final season. Sookie/Alcide fans finally got the moment they wanted. They've been together in the time jump but they finally did some stuff on screen. Jason finally got what he wanted too. lol No Eric in this ep...crazy. I'm sure that'll come as a surprise at some point. Pam's adventure was a good time. And I'll believe Tara is dead when we actually see her explode into blood! I think the actress even said dead doesn't always mean dead. But it happened off camera didn't it? Anyway, she could come back as a ghost or whatever too. lol And Jessica with the fairy daughter (Forget her name) was good stuff too! I think I'm just glad it's ending so I can be invested for these 10 episodes without complaining! lol

Anonymous said...

24--I loved when Jack just threw her out of the window, tired of talking--one of the best scenes ever for any show. It was good to see the Prez again. And yea, Ben Bratt's character is on the run which with Chloe's boyfriend will likely open up a new threat. ONe that Jack will fix this series, maybe next???? I've been thinking the time jump will be the last ep for a while now. But, with this new threat, I'm not 100% sure. Heller's condition is still an issue too. And Audrey's husband has a big problem with those papers he forged on Jack.

Totally Agree--it was sooooo grosssss when Chloe kissed her boss. And we haven't mentioned it, but her Egyptian/Roman eye makeup is over the top for me.

Richard

Mike V. said...

24 - Someone in the comments of an interview I read said the only way it would've been better is if Jack said "The Lannisters send their regards" before throwing her out the window. lol It was pretty great. Well, I guess they only have 2 more options for where the time jump happens, right? lol We're running out of hours.

Yeah..the Goth look for O'brien was cool in the Super Bowl promo, but it's gotten old. Of course, you don't normally change your look within a day! And yes, I didn't comment earlier...gross here too with Chloe/Boss kiss.

MJ said...

TB - yeah the actress said Tara is dead but on this show she could be dead and still on screen - you are right about that. I wanted her mom to die actually - LOL. Agree - time for it to end and yes its easier to just enjoy the ride now that we know its over. LOL on Jason.

24 - yeah the Dragon tatoo Chloe is hard to watch, but Mike is right and unless a chick goes to bed the makeup doesn't change. ;-)

Tyrant - could be an interesting character show actually. Depends on where they are going with it.

Is it me or is this summer way more corwded with tv shows ? I've actually given up some of my usual procedurals in summer to keep up. And we still have Extant, Leftovers, Strain and I think one other show yet to start.

Mike V. said...

TV is an all year long business now which can be good and bad! But, there's just no way to watch everything so networks probably know ratings will be low unless they have a breakout on their hands.

Definitely checking out the Leftovers for obvious reasons. And it looks good too! Cuse actually is behind The Strain. On their LOST podcast's he always compared LOST's science to science you'd see in a Michael Crichton novel so this project is probably something he's always wanted to do.

OITNB - Started it finally! We're 2 episodes in. I heard this season is even more character centric than last year...i.e. less focus on Piper. Which makes sense because she's not even in the same prison right now. But, it sounds like she'll go back. Nice way to get Alex out of the picture for most of season 2. I had heard Laura Prepon wasn't going to be in it much but that she's totally game for more next season.

Mike V. said...

STAR WARS - Oh boy...looks like there might be a delay after all. #NotJJsFault lol

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/06/27/will-harrison-fords-broken-leg-delay-star-wars-episode-vii

Anonymous said...

Star Wars--Of course it's JJ's fault--he's the director. That's like saying the ship's captain isn't at fault when the ship sinks--lol. Disney will want to squeeze him--lol.

More ammo for the doubters.

You know luck is when preparedness meets opportunity. JJ needs to get some.

Han must be in several scenes to have such a major impact. I would have thought them to be able to shoot around his loss as this is about the next generation.

Richard

Mike V. said...

STAR WARS - Yeah yeah yeah...JJ can't control the door of the Millenium Falcon! Crap happens. But yes, he's directing the FILM...he may have decided on props but you'd think a Producer would be in trouble too. Like Kathleen Kennedy...blame her!

Anyway, there are strong rumors that Harrison is not only a major character in the movie but possibly the MAIN character. I just read speculation on TheForce.net of what episode VII might be about. Sounds like it could be interesting. Maybe..lol

Some rumors I heard was that episode VII might be a victory lap for the original cast whilst introducing us to the new generation. That said Mark Hamill has not been on set yet, I don't think as he was attending the Annual Disney World Star Wars Celebration. And that kind of ties into the plot theory I read!

PJ Carz said...

Did not like The Leftovers, at all. I might check it again, but that will be the extent of our checking it out. Major disappointment.

Mike V. said...

Unfortunately I wasn't able to watch anything last night. But I'm surprised about The Leftovers! I read a review that it was decent. Guess I'll just have to see for myself! :) of course if I've learned anything in my tv viewing over the years it's that a pilot episode rarely indicates the best a tv show has to offer!

Anonymous said...

Last Ship-I laughed when they were scouting Guantanamo with the helo since I said they should have done that for FL. Pretty good when Russian ship showed up. Seriously, the stuck/sticky valve thing. Takes years for that to happen in oil service--lol.

I saw the last few minutes of TheLeftovers and thought that part was kind of dumb. But, wasn't that Liv Tyler?

Richard

MJ said...

OINB - What Alex does to Piper - even IF inadvertantly - is so messed up.

No TB or Leftovers yet. Have to see where leftovers will go but I've heard both good and bad comments about it.

Fringe - chick from The Bridge was on. Have seen White Tulip and Brown Betty. LOL

Last Ship - Russian ship? Did I doze off ? I thought a british ship contacted them at the end ?

Mike V. said...

OINB - Agreed! I think we're 3 or 4 episodes in now. It's going slow with all of the other stuff we have to watch...and you know summer/2 kids...lol

Fringe - Love White Tulip! That's stating the obvious, it's one of the fan faves. lol Brown Betty was probably the most polarizing when you look at IMDB...it ranks pretty low. lol I enjoyed it though. Loved those wacky episode 19s.

Leftovers - Still need to watch but yes Liv Tyler is definitely a series regular on the show. And of course the lead is Jennifer Aniston's fiance. lol

Anonymous said...

Last Ship--yea the British ship turned out to be a Russian ship, they went to general quarters toward end of ep.

I'm not sure about this "contractor" they picked up at Guantanamo. I'm not saying he's a Russian spy. But, he could certainly be undercover and working for another group??

Of course we know who one Russian spy is.

Things will start going bad, like gasoline(3 months) if mfg/refining stops--think Revolution. Don't know if they'll be that realistic though. But the scene with the bad diesel seemed like they might be. Nuclear reactors should go through auto shut down or similar. But, could one or two blow up, maybe.

Not so sure about consistency of spreading virus. I mean lots of people were just outside of open doors to med center where they had to have masks on.

Leftovers--well, I like Liv Tyler ever since Armageddon so maybe I'll watch entire pilot. It just seemed to be like a copy cat script.

Richard

Anonymous said...

Falling Skies--We don't know the deal Tom made with the fish face people. But, the awful stuff heading their way sounds like a good reason to listen.

The stuff with Lexi is interesting and can go just about anywhere they want--lol.

Anne's turned into a nut job--lol. She's sure no leader as she's only out for what she wants.

SEriously, Maggie's getting all maternal now and isn't going nutso wanting to kill/break stuff--lol.

Richard

mj said...

Last Ship - I saw them go to GQ - so must have nodded off and missed they were Russian

Leftovers - havent seen but copycat script? We've had another show about people left behind after a supposed rapture?

Falling Skies - agree on Lexie and Anne. Yeah - Maggie wanted to bolt when hal talked about buying a house after the war - but now shes happy baby sitting? Lourdes sure has gone off the deep end. Brain washing tweens is getting interesting - and very nazi-ish

Defiance - speaking of nazi - those erep uniforms ard straight out of nazi book - and her name is Berlin. Irisa's 'make up' def softer this year.

Oinb - Larry andPipers friend kinda messed up too. being vague since I don't know exactly what you have seen. finale is great - did not see it coming til minutes before it happens. And Morelli - shocked to find why she's in jail and how she is with men

Mike V. said...

Leftovers - Wasn't The 4400 a similar theme? That said, this is based on a book with the same name....so the only thing they're really copying are probably themes from the book. lol

OITNB - I think the latest episode I saw was where Vee worked her way into the good graces of fellow prisoners with the cake and that pack of cigarettes was there from her last time there. lol I did hear the finale/ending was awesome. Looking forward to catching up!

Mike V. said...

Leftovers - 1% gradually over a year...not SUDDENLY and mysteriously sparking all kinds of debates about what happened and affecting people's lifestyles. The teasers for the show effectively explained how much 2% really is.

HBO shows always take time to catch fire. If it's a good show, word of mouth will drive people to on-demand, illegal downloads and the numbers and interest will spike. Game of Thrones may have been pulling in 2 million per ep in season 1. Now it's surpassed The Sopranos as the most sucessful HBO original series. And the ratings it's pulling in are network like numbers, but with premium pay subscribers.

That said, there isn't as much hype around this show as there was say True Detective, but that had star power to draw from.

Anyway, I'll have to check it out at some point this week. Will have 24 tonight and hopefully time for another episode of something. lol

Richard - You're towing a fine line getting into what's considered politically and socially acceptable on television now! lol Apparently, we aren't supposed to be offended by that type of "affection" on television these days. It's a stigma that a certain demographic says needs to be changed!

You need some Macklemore in your life to change your views! :-)

I'm just messing around. I get what you're saying! Times certainly have changed. I'll have to check out the article. Thanks for sharing!

Mike V. said...

Good article...couldn't agree more with the information they're selling. I'm hoping the article is meant to be sarcastic in that it's blaming us but it's really the Networks and Nielsen that need to change their models! lol It's an antiquated system that needs to be brought into the 21st century.

AMC couldn't be more on the money with those comments. They have certainly changed their strategy with the new shows they're developing. The came out of the bat with some really bold shows and nothing really since. I set the DVR for these new shows and then never watch them. Their financial woes with Mad Men were well documented and Kurt Sutter (SOA showrunner) wrote a detailed thesis on how everyone else on the AMC payroll got screwed so Matthew Weiner could get paid. lol It's why Breaking Bad ended up with 16 final episodes (over 2 years)....it might be even part of the reason why Frank Darabount was booted off Walking Dead. Lots of turmoil behind the scenes there. And they likely won't be a place for crtically acclaimed dramas anymore after Mad Men ends....and once Walking Dead ends (which they'll spin off forever if they can), they'll be in bad shape ratings-wise too. It's bad news that they had to launch a spinoff of Breaking Bad too.

Of course now Amazon, Hulu and Netflix are getting in the game. Netflix is getting all of the acclaim where AMC used to be with Orange is the New Black and House of Cards. Pretty much indicates where TV could be going....

And the funny thing here is how we haven't even talked about the Big 4 networks in this discussion (though you did mention Blacklist earlier...which I'm sure will earn some nominations from the Emmys....though if Spader beats Cranston for Best Actor, there will be an uprising!)

SyFy - you and the article said it all. It's a mess.

TV--There are different strategies/objectives for advertising. Some are a LOT more time sensitive than others. So, the dvr/internet later watching thing can absolutely destroy those strategies/objectives. This is just one major reason Nielsen and others can't just update how they count. Every day, there are time sensitive ads. I don't have all the answers, but I know why some seemingly easy answers don't work for all.

Since Netflix is a "broadcaster" and also content provider, they can have more control and can do a good job of accounting for downloads. But, their budgets can't be very large. AMC could become a premium pay channel like HBO.

Richard

Mike V. said...

TV - Well, Nielsen has changed....but the fact that we're still airing 3+ minutes of commercials between show segments is obviously not working anymore. It's the whole concept that needs to be revisited.

Sure, they measure DVR+7 day statistics and the shows get a boost 7 days later. But, I think I've read they only count the people who don't fast forward commercials. And really, how many of those people exist?

Plus, the Nielsen Boxes....it is a very small sampling of houses that have these boxes. I know scientifically it's supposed to represent all of america and all demographics, but have you ever met someone that has a Nielsen box? lol All of that is antiquated. I guess with DVRs, they are able to get those statistics from the cable companies or DVR service providers (i.e. TiVo)...maybe??

Of course...I would guess Apple has been investigating ways where people just pay for the channels they want to watch and provide an a la carte service commercial free. But, the cable companies are making that a difficult thing to happen.

Anyway, that would cut the failing advertising strategy right out of the equation and projects would get funded directly by the subscribers like how premium channels like HBO get funded.

Advertising would just need to find different mediums to grab their consumers. The Internet, smart device apps....that's probably where they're finding their targets now anyway.

LIVE events could still have advertisements as they catch a lot of eyeballs that way. And if people still want to watch TV the old fashioned way, then they can still have commercials for those folks.

I dunno...I'm sure this is all being discussed. One thing is for sure...TV is the last dying communal medium that is being divided into NICHE groups that cater to very specific audiences. Network Television was mean to be broad and appeal to masses where advertising would be most effective.

But TV is getting more creative, more specific. And seeing the results, it's hard to contest against that. There is still an audience for broad TV shows like Big Bang Theory or Law & Order or whatever.

So, it's just a matter of figuring out a strategy to cater to all different audience types. Easier said than done! lol But, that's a job I wouldn't mind being involved in!

Good point on AMC...kinda gets into what I was saying above too. We're on the same wavelength I think.

Anybody watching Crossbones with Malkovich? Not bad

MJ said...

FYI - Talking Dead has a special on Sunday 9pm that is supposedly a look ahead to season 5.

Last Ship - forgot - we had the last 2 mins cut off on this and another show this week. So that is why I probably did not know they were Russian. Dominion was the other one but we re-recorded that one to see that he's sleeping with an angel.

Leftovers - still not watched. LOL Didn't know was based on a book. 4400 was alien abductions and they were returned, which to me is different then being left behind when the Rapture happens.

TV these days - Richard it's a good thing you don't watch True Blood then.

TB - yowza! where that vamp died on Arlene ! And I did NOT remember Jason ever drinking of Eric to have those dreams. And Eric is now infected ?

Crossbones - my husband was watching but a darned baseball game went over and he missed one recently. He might have given it up though

Mike V. said...

Talking Dead - Thanks for the heads up. I think they've done that 4th of July wknd the past couple years. They've at least released a trailer the past couple years. Hopefully it's already set to record! lol

Leftovers - Looks like we made the same TV decisions last night. lol I didn't get to this either. Ahhh on 4400...I didn't really know what it was about! And yes, this was based on a book. And the author of the book is involved with the show as well. The story will be different than the book though. Similar themes.

TV these days - LOL, so true. I know it's "phobic" of me to say, but that was kind of painful to watch! lol

True Blood - I think that happened last season with Jason. I can't remember the exact scenario though. But yeah..looks like Eric has the Hep-V. I smell a flashback coming to how he got out of the sun and how he got into his current predicament!

24 - That had to be the best hour that has aired so far. CHENG IS BACK!!!! Time for Jack to finally get some revenge on that dude...and I totally forgot he abducted Audrey leading her to her catatonic state. Jack had some great one-liners in this one. "Immunity is not on the table...but your HAND is!!!" LOL And the whole "I wasn't asking for permission" stuff. Classic Jack! Loved it. Pretty clear it's going to be a time jump in the last hour now.

Longmire--good ep. Sorry to see the big guy die. So, another criminal is let loose--that happens too much.

Leftovers--well, it's not supposed to be the rapture. As they said, it includes a lot of bad people so they want you to know it's not THE rapture. So, we don't know why it happened. I saw an interview with Damon and he said he hoped that the viewers are less interested in that story and are interested in the character development stuff. I read a wiki on the book and the story line is kind of depressing to me.

Richard

Mike V. said...

Leftovers - I just assumed "The Rapture" would be one theory that some of the characters think happened and changes their way of life. But, I still haven't watched so I dunno. It's still "Rapture-themed" regardless! But yeah, Damon has been very upfront about MYSTERIES on the show. He doesn't want people spinning theories like they did with LOST expecting answers. He said that the mystery of the disappearance will not be solved. It's what happens to the people Left Behind...which is what he wants the show to focus on.

Hmmm...maybe I'm thinking of LEFT BEHIND not The 4400. I forget if that was a TV show/Movie/ or book though. lol

24--a good ep and yes, Jack seems to be asserting some authority since the Prez is all behind him. Confidence is back and so is swagger--lol. I was so surprised when I saw Cheng, then it came to be that maybe some closure will happen with Audrey. Her new hubby is going to be found out. Bad boy boyfriend took a head shot and Cheng knows Chloe's the real deal. We'll be left with a few dangling issues for obvious reasons. And yes, I have always said, the last ep will be the time shift--lol. I think you did too, but maybe weren't as convinced??? Now watch it be next ep--LOL!

Richard

Mike V. said...

24 - Yes you did say that about the time jump. I thought it sounded plausible. I just didn't know if there would be MULTIPLE time jumps. lol

Yeah, the minute they start bringing up "chinese" in discussion earlier in the episode, I started thinking of Chen but it still shocked me when he showed up. That was a nice surprise. They certainly will have to have some Jack/Audrey closure. But, I agree...leave some loose ends for future mini-series potential.

MJ said...

I forgot to watch 24 ! I finished S2 of Fringe ! Yay. Went over there and now have met Fauxlivia again. Got our first 'red' screen. So of course have actor playing Charlie back again and have met other side Lee. No our side Lee yet. I don't remember - do they ever explain other side Astrid really?

I see you got another season of Community ! hear it's airing on Yahoo.

Leftovers - I def read that we are not supposed to wonder about the rapture but focus on those left also

Mike V. said...

Fringe - Ahh season 3 is the best season! Season 2 was pretty fantastic too and that finale was awesome. I don't think they ever really do explain Alt-Astrid in the show. In interviews I think they mention she has aspergers/autistic. It's definitely on the wiki sites (which I just double checked), but I don't remember them flat outsaying it in the show.

Community - Oh yes, that was a pleasant surprise. 6 seasons and a Movie is still alive! Of course, I'd be happy if they just named season 7: MOVIE lol That would be something they'd do.

Mike V. said...

Better Call Saul (BB Spinoff) - Now while I am not thrilled with the state of the future of AMC...I'm obviously going to check this show out! Of course, the temptation to bring back Breaking Bad cast was too high, so the show will now span PRE-BB, during BB, and POST BB timelines lol

Under the Dome - anyone think Stephen King was a LOST fan? lol Definitely had some LOST flashbacks with this episode....the dome was magnetized, lots of appearances by dead people and a moment of woman of science vs. woman of faith with the science teacher and Julia. I thought it was a good first episode back, but who knows how it will go when Stephen King isn't doing the writing. It was fun to see a couple of old friends so to speak.....Tag from Friends, yes, also from CSI:NY and Dr. Lewis from ER, and they are brother and sister! :)

Mike V. said...

@Leslie - Welcome back! :-) I don't watch Under The Dome and while he's not the showrunner of the show, I know he's involved...and the show is surpassing the book's events at this point.

But to answer your LOST question...YES! He was absolutely a LOST fan. He wrote about it for EW on occassion and even sat down for a joint panel with Damon and Carlton moderated by EW's Jeff Jensen. It was an awesome interview back in the day! They basically all just worshipped each other. lol

Leslie said...

Thanks Mike! I knew you didn't watch Dome last season, but I thought MJ did and maybe Richard. Doesn't surprise me that King was a LOST fan. The book (which I didn't read) came out in 2009, so maybe it was influenced by LOST. I think he is an executive producer, but he wrote this first episode this season.

Talking Dead - I saw about the episode this weekend and checked my DVR....already set to record.

Orange - plan to get to this soon. Can't wait!

Mike V. said...

The Leftovers - Well, I liked it! No, not groundbreaking television yet but it was a world builder. Establishing the setting and the players. I thought it was effective at that. It was surprising that no one from the main guy's family actually vanished. But that Amy Brenneman's character has taken that vow of silence with the crazy group.

I disagree that they proved it wasn't The Rapture. As Lindelof has said many times now, we're not supposed to worry about why they are gone...it's dealing with the fallout. So, some people DO believe it's the Rapture, other people do not. The only time they flat out said "it's not the rapture" it was one dude that clearly seemed off his rocker.

There was one guy that said he understood why The Pope left, but then was curious why Gary Busey would too. lol So, clearly he was thinking it seemed like the rapture, but questioned why certain people were taken. So yeah...I guess there are clues that it "isn't" the rapture but I think the bigger point is that some people believe it is and others don't and that creates conflict in every day lives post 10/14.

The whole dogs thing was bizarre. They're not our dogs anymore? Well whose are they? And why did they take out that deer? Oh Damon...you tell us not to worry about mysteries but then you put them in there so blatantly! lol But, maybe if there are only a couple questions circling around, they'll be easily manageable.

Definitely interested to check out more. The only thing that might get old quick is the extremely dark tone of the show. There were a COUPLE moments where comedy was used... (Gary Busey, banter between the Chief and a coworker) but they'll need more of that if they want people to stick around. lol

Anonymous said...

Leftovers--LOL,you're a Damon fan, you can't help but like it--lol.

Dome--great on catching some good points Leslie. I also noticed it was a kind of transition ep where we lost some and gained some characters with different "skill sets". It kind of felt like they've changed it some to make it last longer, I'm not sure though. I didn't expect Jim to be killed, couldn't buy into that, not at this time. What do you think made the Dome quit hurting people? It seemed pretty obvious that the tower magnet didn't work when they were all knocked out after it was activated.

Falling Skies--I ask myself why I watch and kind of like this show. Maybe because I like to root for under dogs.

Richard

Mike V. said...

Leftovers - That may be, but I think people are generally quick to judge too! lol

MJ said...

24 - agree with the Jack lines and such. Glad Chloe's guy is dead. I think I read something prior to this season that reminded me how Audrey got so messed up.

Dome - I did watch last year Leslie but dicided to drop it for this year.

Leftovers - it was interesting. We shall see. I was surprised that the cops son is apparently involved with one crazy religion and the wife in the other. i was actually surprised he WAS the cops son. The non-talking - can't decide if it's creepy or annoying. LOL Rabid dogs was interesting. I think that one guy talking about bad people being taken so not the rapture is just to show that all the people left behind have different thoughts and such on what did happen. I don't think the show is saying it was the Rapture or not yet but thought I read before it aired that the Rapture happened. As for 'not our dogs' I didn't take it that literally - thought it was meaning that they are now rabid or crazed so not our lovable pets any more. I get that people are upset thet they lost loved ones so quickly - butt that does happen in real life on a personal level. So this is an excuse for all teens to behave badly ? I'll give it some time but not a great as I had hoped.

Falling Skies - I really like this show. They go off in weird directions some times but i like all the characters. And yeah - guess I like to root for the underdog too. LOL

Mike V. said...

Leftovers - I think that was the original pitch that it was the Rapture. But now I think it's left more open ended.

I wasn't taking the "not our dogs" literally either. I just meant...what happened to the dogs??? Why did they change?

As for people behaving badly...I think it's more psychological than anything. Sure, one person dies suddenly and you mourn and it's over. Here 2% of the world disappeared instantaneously. Some people think that WAS the Rapture. So the good people were taken off of the planet. (obviously, we see it's not ALL good people) But, this gives teenagers and others an excuse to throw up their hands and say, "well who cares what we do now?" I think we'll learn more of the motivations of each of the particular religions.

Anyway, once again...all I'm saying is that it's too early to judge the series as a whole! But no, if I only had this first episode to judge the series on I wouldn't be terribly impressed either. Being a Lindelof fan I guess I kind of give him the benefit of the doubt. They had to establish the world, introduce all the players...now they can dive into the nitty gritty.

Dome had roughly 9 1/2 million viewers while Leftovers had 1.8million. It will be interesting to see where they go from there. Leftovers had the TB intro from like 3 1/2 million viewers.

Richard

Mike V. said...

You realize you just compared Broadcast network to Premium pay cable right? lol

Game of Thrones started around 2 million viewers too. And True Blood used to get a lot more viewers back in its day as well.

HBO works the opposite of Broadcast in that its audience grows over time due to many replays and lots of on-demand/streaming ways of catching up. I'm not saying Leftovers will reach GoT-like phenomenon levels but expectations in ratings are definitely lower on pay cable. It's more of who in their target market of their subscriber base tuned in and what was the general reaction? And how does that trend throughout the season?

FWIW - Dome actually dropped viewers from last summer.

Anonymous said...

I definitely realize the comparison includes a broadcast vs pay model. But, I don't know anyone who gets CBS for free any more. Around here all the cable/satellite/etc companies compete using HBO as an enticement part of a bundle such as that it really doesn't cost that much more than basic cable anymore. So, while their business models are different, for everyone I know, there is no difference in cost or access. I think that's increasingly the case, where basic HBO is not really the premium cost it used to be due to competition and bundling.

It would be interesting to know the following
1.% households with cable/satellite/etc vs just broadcast.(BTW and a big BTW, the new HD antennaes don't work nearly as well as old style and so many are having to go to a provider of some sort) I think like near 90% and since Aereo SCOTUS decision, cord cutting may be slowed some?
2.% of cable/satellite/etc subscribers who get HBO. I think this may be over 28%?

My observations and resultant assumption is that since HD TV broadcast was introduced, the numbers have moved a lot.

So, while I know their business models are different I'm not so sure their reach and access is vastly different as years ago.

REgardless, one was more than 5 times more watched than the other and that should not be lost when evaluating a show. (while reaching approx 3 1/2 times more viewers) Not trying to trash Leftovers either. Not saying that the eye ball test is the only or best test. GoT would love to have 9 1/2 million viewers, and I think it will have.

Richard

Mike V. said...

That's all interesting stuff but it's not my point at all.

Ratings are used for completely different things for Networks, regular cable vs. subscriber based cable services.

HBO is a pay service. Even if you get a deal to get it for free, it's temporary and eventually you're paying. There are no ads except ads for other HBO programming. We are paying for the programming that is provided to us. Our subscription money goes towards paying the Game of Thrones bills, the Leftovers Bills, the True Detective bills, etc...

Where as Broadcast networks, we are paying to watch those TV shows by watching the commercials and potentially buying the advertised products. Advertisers are paying for real-estate during high rated programming and will pay top dollar for strategically placed ads where they're hitting the money making demographics.

It's 2 completely different business models.

Game of Thrones DOES have 9.5 million viewers. It has more than that now, with repeat viewings. But it built that audience over time and is now a flagship HBO show.

Even Breaking Bad which was critically acclaimed was getting by on like 2 million viewers per episode until it show up in the final half season to astronomic levels. Mad Men same thing. Those are not pay cable channels so they're playing by similar network rules except there are lower expectations on cable TV. (that margin is lessening every year) Still...AMC is in trouble because they were paying premium cable money for their talent on a cable network budget.

I get your point that numbers are numbers, but the facts behind the numbers are important too. For example, if 10 million watched Dome vs. 10 million watched Thrones...I'd say the Thrones number is FAR more impressive due to the fact that those are paid subscribers (which is a subset of the TV viewing public) watching.

Anonymous said...

Yea and the business models are in question too. ONe key reason it's not included in my evaluation criteria of the worth of a show to a viewer. Roughly 115 million TV viewing households or less. Roughly 27million HBO subscribers. Dome got roughly 8% of the 115 million. But, a lot of those households can't get all channels due to HD antennae. So, if you evaluate using say universe of 95 million, then the % is around 10. Leftovers got roughly 7% of the HBO viewers.

CBS has on demand and internet viewing as does HBO and could be added too.

My major points are.
1. To claim the viewership is drastically different is not as true as it was 10 years ago. The gap is closing. It's one reason I suggested AMC might think about becoming more like HBO model.
2. HD TV is forcing more and more people into cable/satellite/etc which is causing more people to get HBO. Again reducing the discrepancy in viewer numbers.
3.As more people are paying for TV, the option of charging for TV becomes more attractive. Netflix/Hulu are other examples of paid entertainment models.
4. At the end of the day you need eyeballs regardless of a particular business model. The higher your fixed cost, the more eyeballs you need. One reason news rooms are being hacked.
5. There are those in between such as CNN, TNT, etc that charge carriers for content and sell advertising. CNN--Cable News Network began by taking advantage of the at that time new delivery of content through cable. They made a boat load of money for a while.
6. You better win in the universe in which you are playing. For CBS, that's about 90 to 95 million, for HBO, that's about 27 million.
7.The Aereo ruling could have an impact on business models.

Richard

Leslie said...

You guys and your debating! LOL!

Dome - They needed to change it up a bit once they were renewed for a second season, so the fresh and familiar faces were a good thing.

Murder in the First - on TNT...anyone watching?

Mike V. said...

HBO has HBO GO which is completely different than any other channel offering. If you're a subscriber you have access to HBO's ENTIRE library of original programming via internet TV device (apple TV, Roku, amazon fire, smart TV, PS3, XBOX etc...), tablet, phone. EVERY episode, not just the last 5.

People who hear about game of thrones don't have to go out and buy the blu-rays, dvds or any other means. They can subscribe to HBO and then start from the beginning. CBS? Not so much.

1. Business models are different, not viewership. But yes that may change. I'm not so sure it will change for the big 3 networks just yet though.
2. TEMPORARY subscriptions to HBO which a large percentage will be canceled once it's not free anymore.
3. Most people are paying for TV...you already made that point. HBO is a premium on top of that price regardless of temporary packages where it is offered for free.
4. The more content providers that are available, the more content that is offered, the more niche programming becomes...the less important BIG numbers are...the more important numbers of a specific target audience are.
5. ok? lol
6. Yeah, that's my point. different scales, different models, different expectations
7. True...I need to look more into that. Not exactly sure the details

I'm not saying things aren't changing. If anything, I'm usually the one on the forefront of those discussions. The TV landscape is absolutely changing. But if you're going to compare the 2nd season of Under the Dome's ratings on a broadcast network vs. the typically low ratings to HBO's 1st season of The Leftovers, I'm going to to have to comment about the expectations on each! lol

Everything else we're talking about is interesting, but it's more about the future of TV than the current measurements.

Busy wknd so didn't get to see the Sunday Shows. Watched first 10 minutes of True Blood then the Mrs. fell asleep. lol I heard it's pretty awful besides the last 5 minutes.

OITNB - Piper just had her Furlow episode (is that how you spell it?). And it was a Red flashback ep too to where she and Vee had their first altercation. Good stuff. Oh man....that Lorna centric Valentine's episode was nuts! And so is she! lol Crazy stalker!

Last Ship--great reveal with guy who has lived with virus on Russian ship. I almost laughed when the other researcher threatened to open up the vial with virus. NO WAY that was going to happen with the main characters right there. Something to wind down with on Sunday night though. The male/female Lts on the same mission were funny. She's not an operator, so wouldn't have gone given how far away they jumped from boat--too much made up drama with after effect as well. Small craft would have been shot up with defensive guns and what purpose does it have when the explosions didn't occur at the same time anyway. Ship moving and no radar signature was crazy, would have been a moving dot on radar. This ep asked me to believe too many unbelievable elements.

Richard

Mike V. said...

24 - Well, I guess we should've considered the possibility that we'll be jumping 12 hours WITHIN an episode because that surely looks like what has to happen next week. lol Matt Mittovich on TVline.com has been saying the whole time that they might do a "12 hours later" sequence where we see Jack and Audrey sipping Mai Tai's (sp) on a beach somewhere. lol Might not be far off.

This was another great hour though putting Jack in the rough spot of exposing Mark to Heller and having to confess ahead of time (sorta) to Audrey. Of COURSE they had to tie the Russian and Chinese plots together and tie Jack's drama all into a neat tidy bow that he can dismantle in the next hour (or 45-55 minutes? lol).

Hopefully, they'll let him and Audrey get some closure with putting Cheng out of his misery!

Hopefully right before the time jump Jack will be on a plane travelling to wherever...and say something like "I'm gonna take a nap...but first, I need to go to the bathroom" since he has never done either during any of the previous 8 24 hour periods! lol

Anonymous said...

24--decent ep. Yea it really did tie a lot of stuff together, very quickly and conveniently--lol.

Hard to see Jack and Audrey sipping MaiTais on a beach. They're so normally in the middle of tough stuff. That would be nice and I'd like to see it though. I almost expect that Jack will be in another tough spot for our next series-lol. He's starting to look a little old though.

Richard

Falling Skies--OK, so they've escaped again and Anne is close to her daughter. Pretty good ep. Lexie is key of course and I kind of believe the esphenie about the upcoming danger. I didn't understand Maggie's change, but kind of liked it. So the guns weren't a big surprise.

Richard

Mike V. said...

24 - Oh, I think Matt M. was joking about the "happily ever after" ending. lol But, the concept is probably right on. It'll be a coda that brings some closure for Jack and/or sets up a potential cliffhanger for another mini-series/movie.

Yeah Keifer is getting older (as we all are lol)....actually, if you count up all the years that have passed by on the show, Jack Bauer should probably be in his 60s by now. lol There were some seasons that took place years after the previous season. And of course this one literally was 4 years later.

Anyway, they've been doing a pretty good job at setting up Yvonne Strahovski (sp - i.e. Kate Morgan) as a possible 24 spinoff candidate. But, they're going to explore their options after this mini-series is over.

I think as long as Jack Bauer survives he has to be involved in all future 24 projects to some extent!

Anonymous said...

24--I think they're setting up Kate as well. But maybe unintentionally for a fall-lol. That show would fail as a lot of second edition/spinoffs don't do well. Some do, but I don't see her as one who could carry a series like this. 24 IS Jack Bauer and his presence is so important to viewers. Just look how we reacted when he resumed his BA approach.

Thought it interesting that in this season, they have most all of the bad guys/potential bad guys-- muslim terrorists, Russians and Chinese. I'm waiting for a North Korea intro last ep--lol.

I actually went into this season with a bit of a yawn. But, when Jack started kicking A, it got fun. And yes, I like Chloe too--but she's got to get rid of that eye liner. When the computer guy back at CIA HQ was having trouble tracking stuff, I said to myself--where's Chloe!!!, she could do it!!!!

It will be interesting to see if they end with closure or cliffhanger.

Longmire-so we see who's behind some of this stuff and that there's a Colorado connection. Pretty neat how the long lost brother communicated to Longmire that he remembered him from childhood.

Dome--So, is anyone believing that Jim has seen the light. Barbie and the girl holding hands all the time was like they were back in school--lol. So, who's going to work the diner now.

Crossbones--is anyone watching Malkovich?

True Blood - Got spoiled again before I saw the episode. It's tough not watching this the night it airs, but I've lost the will to care at the same time too! So RIP Alcide I guess. lol Episode was okay. Nothing too exciting. Just looking forward to the end.

Still no Leftovers. I'm still hearing mixed things. Listened to my podcast today and they're being optimistic about the show. They realize it's not for everything but they admire Lindelof for what he's attempting. One of the guys on the podcast had a good idea. Now, I know they're following the book pretty closely so far, but it would be interesting to introduce a character whose life has improved since 10/14. Most of the show is dark and dreary. But maybe this guy had some crappy loaded parents who treated him like dirt and they both disappeared leaving him with a huge inheritance and he's having the time of his life. Having a character with a positive outlook could make the show a little more digestable. But..we'll see how things go! I hear even through 5 episodes the tone doesn't change too much. But, I'll stick with it and give Damon the benefit of the doubt! It sounds like he's doing a pretty faithful adaptation at this point.

Orange - We're 11 episodes in now. The Nun was about to get a shot. I think I was half asleep but maybe it was because she wasn't eating? Newsletter got shut down. Some old lady shivved someone she thought was Vee but it wasn't. Alex might be in trouble outside of prison. Looking forward to wrapping up the season!

Star Wars - Meant to post this a couple days ago. Kevin Smith was invited to the Episode VII set by Abrams to check things out. This article has quotes but the video is at the bottom. Go to the 35:00 mark and he talks for like 12 minutes spoiler free. He has me more excited though!

Crossbones - Haven't been watching. Several people have asked me about it though. Is it any good?

Anonymous said...

Crossbones is a good show with good acting and sometimes great dialog--very interesting. I don't get why such a good show is on Friday at 10. Except that the dialog can be best appreciated by those having some level of education--lol. I watched the OnDemand on Uverse to catch up. I wish it had more sea action, but it seems ALL pirate shows these days are land bound--lol. It's during Blackbears later half career.

Richard

Mike V. said...

Crossbones - Sounds like something I might enjoy. I'll have to see if there are other means of catching up. Probably NBC app on my phone/tablet. As for sea action...yeah that gets expensive. Just look at Waterworld. lol Of course, with CG and green screens it has probably become a little easier. But Vikings is a lot more land stuff than sea too. lol

Anonymous said...

BTW, Vikings is way better than Crossbones, but I'm biased--lol. Vikings has like over a 50% bigger audience and it's on History Channel---lol. Bringing on some good cast members for S3.

Malkovich is very good though

Richard

Mike V. said...

well yeah, it's Malcovich!! lol He's awesome. But, I've read the show isn't too great as a whole. But, if I get a chance I'll check it out! I'm inclined to think Vikings is probably better too. lol

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the post, but shouldn't that be in GoT post area?

Great info though, I didn't know he didn't work while traveling. That he has to be at home and relaxed with a big block of time. That really would slow him down with the other demands.

Puts me back into the mode of he may not finish before TV show.

Richard

OK, I was just over at GoT post area and your post was there. Maybe I should have checked there first--lol.

Richard

That's what I thought too...he's just enjoying life and will finish when he's finished. lol

OITNB - I couldn't decide if Piper was right to not tell Red that the family business was closed. Stalker - right ! I was shocked that she is a major nut job.

Dome - did it get any better by the way ?

TB - I hated to see Alcide go ! He ws some fine eye candy ! LOL But I guess lots of folks will be dying now.

Speaking of Vikings - Fringe mentioned the Bloody Eagle ! Stated it was from the Vikings era and very brutal. Was episode marionette.

Fringe - finished Season 3! Still great. But now behind on other stuff LOL

MJ said...

SOA - OMG ! I'm excited to see it again now. Just like after the Writers Room and they showed the Gemma killing scene - I ws excited to watch again then.

And I think you meant Tyrant ? I have that on DVR so will have to look for the SOA thing

Mike V. said...

Tyrant - I'm out. Didn't watch but heard lousy things about it. lol

SOA - Another one I'm excited for it to end. But I still enjoy it when it's on. Just those episodes are soooooo long! (but we've been there lol)

OITNB - Yeah...I think she was trying to spare Red some grief. She might be serving a life sentence, can't remember. lol Only one episode left to watch. Vee was going after Red in the episode I just watched. Not looking good for her. But, it wasn't looking good for Pennsatucky either and she's just fine. lol

Nice on Fringe! Season 4 is where it gets a little weird, but still great.

Anonymous said...

Dome--wasn't bad really. Better than a lot of shows.

Dominion--I'm still watching and not bad. I actually like the actor playing Gabriel and the General for Vegas was Whitmore of LOST--I really liked him.

Richard

Mike V. said...

Leftovers - Well I'm guessing whoever didn't like the first episode probably didn't like the 2nd either. I'm still enjoying it and HBO said yesterday they're happy with its performance too. They said at TCAs the ratings it's getting are expected due to the subject matter. There are tiny bits of comedy thrown into the show here and there to lighten it up a bit. They don't detract from the story so I could see them amping that up a bit in the future. Like the chief's dad watching Perfect Strangers and finding out all 4 of the leads were part of the 14th disappearance. lol

The opening credits debuted this week and very strongly pointed towards The Rapture. It was long one long Sistine Chapel painting. lol But, of course, they aren't planning on answering what happened to them. Though Damon may have just said that so people wouldn't focus on it and expect it any time soon. Who knows? Who cares? If the show is worth watching in the meantime, that's all that matters. And some may debate that. This isn't LOST, it's not intended to be. And apparently, it's a pretty faithful adaptation of the book so far.

So it was interesting that the chief's dad was talking to someone who wasn't there and that he knew that Kevin (Looked it up finally lol) had been visited by someone.

Love that they're going with the whole Snuffleupagus (sp) thing with the dog killing dude (who has been on tons of shows)....like he's imaginary....of course his daughter saw him now.

Anyway, enjoying the show and will keep watching.

ORANGE - FInished! Great ending! Loved how it all came together. Piper found a way to get Alex back to jail (I'm sure that will be drama in the 3rd season when Alex finds out)....and then the cancer lady ran over VEE! Sure, maybe it was a little TOO convenient that everyone was in the right place at the right time but it sure made for good TV! lol

The mustache dude taking over as warden in this episode was hysterical. Actually he had a great plot all season. But he was on fire in this ep. lol And the big guard talking and singing to the nuns. Good times. lol

24 - Inside Scoop on the future of 24 and the finale

"hat are the chances we will see another season of 24? —Ron
I for a moment feared they were nonexistent, after hearing third-hand about some interview where Kiefer Sutherland allegedly said he’s getting too old for this… stuff. But once I found his actual quotes, I see that he never went nearly that far. EP Manny Coto, meanwhile, said in a Reddit AMA this week, “As of now, there are no plans to continue the show next year but we remain open to the possibility. We had a great time doing it this year and would love to take another crack at it.” So, I’d say the chances are better than 50-50. UPDATE: I screened the finale on Thursday afternoon, and it is no less than fantastic. Your heart will race, your eyes will well up, your fists will pump, you will wish it lasted longer. (And yes, it accounts for the 12 “missing” hours.) All told, a gripping, emotional finish to one of the TV season’s great comeback stories."

24--that's good news. And this shorter season format worked fine for the show.

Leftovers--yea the book is depressing and they're staying close to the book--lol.
You're such a Damon fan(I know I said it before)--lol.

Richard

Mike V. said...

24 - Agreed

Leftovers - What pisses me off are the people that automatically reject anything Damon puts out into the world because of ONE LOST Episode. It's ridiculous. Yes, I'm a Damon fan. He kept the gears moving on my favorite show of all time and I've been impressed at what he's worked on since then too. But that doesn't make me a Damon apologist either. If I thought The Leftovers sucked, I'd say so. But I'm enjoying it so far. No show is going to be fantastic out of the gate. They need time to build. And it's a slow burn of a show from what it seems. That doesn't make it bad. And it's certainly not intended to be LOST nor should it be.

Anonymous said...

LOL on Damon. I agree he did a great job on LOST. And I thought the ONE episode was good. He fought to keep LOST true to what they wanted it to be. I admire that.

And I'm not criticizing him here as much as the material sucks. I wish he had done something else that is more exciting/upbeat. I watch TV mainly/ almost purely for entertainment(except news for example) and I don't find depressing shows very entertaining. I get enough hard knocks in my businesses.

Richard

Mike V. said...

It's a fair point and I get that. And definitely am not getting "enjoyment" out of the show yet. But I'm interested to why Damon was interested and I'd like to see what he plans to do with the show and the concept. Maybe it'll never get less dark. And if so it'll never attract a larger audience and they may be fine with that.

Mike V. said...

True Blood - Funny stuff on the origins of Fangtasia...The Stackhouses taking charge was a good time. Definitely getting a lot of callbacks to previous seasons so it's starting to feel like the end. Still happy with that! lol

Mike V. said...

BTW - I think next on our "catchup list" for the summer is going to be House of Cards. We've heard from enough people that we need to be watching. lol I think Nashville and Revenge can wait a bit (and I'm in no rush to watch either of them!).

Anonymous said...

Last Ship--So, they have some medicine. We'll see where they go from here. But seems like island hoping of a type is in the future.

Falling Skies--not bad, now we're seeing some behind the curtain action.

Richard

MJ said...

Soa - LOL on lengths.

Leftovers - love that you equate the invisiblity to snuffupagus ! Too funny. Not bad so far.

Fringe - half way thru season 4. Peter was just told by Sept that this is his Olivia ! Totally forgot Evil Nina who was shifter. Also forgot that Peter has a dream and him and Liv are in the park and Walter is playing - they call it the perfect day. Totally aligning with the thing to come when they are in the park with Henry and well you know what happens.

Mike V. said...

Leftovers - Still only 2 eps in...but yeah it was the first thing I thought of with Snuffy. lol I heard the 3rd episode is pretty good and apparently it centers around a different character. From the previews that seems to be accurate.

Mike V. said...

Fringe - Wow...didn't realize they talked about that dream in the park in season 4. That's crazy. And of course we know it's Henrietta in the altered timeline. lol

I don't think I ever could make sense of where Evil Nina came from. I even forget my questions at the time. She was a shifter? So it wasn't actually Blue-verse Nina or Alternate Nina? that might clear it up a bit. lol

Anonymous said...

24--time shift as I thought might happen but I kind of thought they would be back in US. And didn't expect Audrey would be killed. And how stupid that was, seriously, no Securing The Area at all. SOP to look for additional shooters/bad guys. Snipers have spotters many times. And the sniper missed while two agents with pistols made the kill shot through a dark window, amazing shooting, but how bad to miss a shooter in the open on the road with light!. It seems like a storyline origin for Kate that was forced. Where she will eventually track down the shooter??

Chloe got rid of the ridiculous makeup, thankfully. Her helping Jack was good again. For some reason, that storyline hasn't got old for me. Glad they made up and the ending showed how close they are.

Jack getting revenge for Audrey was great and loved Cheng loosing his head with a samurai sword. What a great scene. Jack took it to the bad guys. But then Chloe was taken and Jack got a call. You just knew something bad was going to happen. So, Jack trades himself for Chloe to the Russians. They obviously don't want to kill him now for a reason. And it sets up a storyline if they want it. Prez Heller was sad at the end speaking about effects of Alzheimers and Audrey.

I hope they do another one!

Richard

Mike V. said...

24 - Loved the episode! As thrilling as any great episode of 24 in its original run. Yeah, the strategy of Audrey's death was a little weak, agreed. But what it was a catalyst for was fantastic. I think we all kinda figured there would be no happy ending for Jack and Audrey. And Jack's reaction and going ballistic on Cheng's crew and then Cheng himself was fantastic! The time jump worked...I liked that because it was a 12 hour jump they could still use the same clock through the whole episode and just throw a 12 hours later text up. And of course Jack said in the beginning the events take place between 10pm and 11am. lol I like that they left things open-ended for a return one day. There was an interview with Alex Gansa (linked below) who says they literally JUST FINISHED production on the finale and the mini-series and they need some distance from it before they start thinking about what's next for the franchise. But they were thrilled that absence made the heart grow fonder for the series.

Agreed the Jack and Chloe making up at the end was great. It was a nice mirroring to the series finale where they said their goodbyes, but this time it was in person. If they do another series I'd like to see Kate Morgan return as well! She turned in her gun and badge so she could be another Jack Bauer just surfacing when she's needed.

http://tvline.com/2014/07/14/24-live-another-day-finale-recap-audrey-dies/

Mike V. said...

24 - No problem on the link. I saw another one on EW that Jack could've been killed. Yeah the 24 writers have always flown by the seat of their pants with writing this series...which is why 24 hours often did not add up to an amazing season (season 5 being an exception which was pretty solid from start to finish... President Logan was the mole!! lol)

I thought the same with setting up some drama/friction between Kate/Jack in a future installment. It just goes into the whole thing about Jack and Kate's conversation about how you move on from these tragic events....you just don't function the same anymore. It's made Jack a hardened man who is through and through a patriot for his country. Well, not even that anymore....this season he just wanted to protect the Heller family. But it turned into a bigger deal...and personal too with Cheng.

Ratings - They weren't TOO impressive...but rarely is anything anymore on Network TV. I think it was hovering around 5 million viewers (debuted at 9 million)...but it's a loyal fanbase...and sometimes that has monetary value. Plus it was summer and expectations were lower. It was still a critical success story in any case.

MJ said...

Fringe - yes evil Nina was only a shifter. They never seem to say if Nina existed on the red side I don't think. Olivia and real Nina have breakfast when Olivia is realizing that she is losing her alternate memories and there were white tulips on the table !

House of Cards - you def want to watch that one.

24 was awesome ! Threw a pillow at my hustband when Audrey died he said 'at least her dad won't remember for long' and then Heller goes ans says it ! LOL I just can't seem to remember why the Russians want him so bad !

TB - great Pamisms ! Gonna miss Pam. Very sad when Hyt talks to Jason like he was a stranger. Glad Jessica finally fed too. Young Ginger was hysterical - as was Pam stealing the Fantasia idea. Thought that Arlene was a goner - but very sweet she got to see Terry.

Mike V. said...

Fringe - Ahhh finally makes sense! lol Must've missed that the first time around. Nice on the white tulips!

24 - Too funny with your husband! And too true too. lol

TB - I thought so with Arlene too. Last season, all bets are off!

Under the Dome - Richard, are you still watching? Pretty good episode last night. The teacher is sure getting power hungry with her, "I stopped it....me" and "selectively thinning the herd". Wow! This probably doesn't mean anything, but then again, it might...after watching LOST, I notice numbers...James' mother's birthday was the code he had to input 8-1-71 and the locker combination was 8-17-1. Not the same, but similar. Just found it curious.

So, we know the mother is alive and there is some secret between her, Sam and Lyle from 25 years ago which happens to be the timeframe that the mysterious girl comes from...hmmmmm.....what does it all mean? lol

True Detective - Getting ready to watch this on DVD. Do I remember from your posts on here that it is a complete story and that it was pretty good?

Anonymous said...

Under the Dome--I dvrd and will watch tonight!! I am actually glad to have read your comments first as it will help me keep up. Yea, the teacher is almost looking a little loopy to me already. I also don't trust the new dude in the cabin, Jim's brother I think. I actually trust Jim more--lol. We could always read the book and kind of figure things out too, except not all characters are there and/or the same--lol. I have read summaries and excerpts online from the book.

24--Jack killed a relative of a well connected Russian, some higher up in gov. I think(can't recall for sure) like a brother of a minister of something? So, why he's wanted alive is curious, maybe torture??? Mike will correct me I'm sure if I"m wrong.

Richard

Leslie--awesome viewing on catching details on Dome!! I read your post and still didn't see the dates--lol or pay attention to them. Yea, 1988 was a key date too for the girl who doesn't know where she's from or who she is. I thought from the beginning something's weird with her now it seems she's resurrected.

Rebecca's a nut job full of self grandeur. At least Jim kind of sees it.

And Lyle with Sam and the mother was great. I did a wiki search and we'll see more of all 3 of them this season I 'm thinking since they're listed on the site vs not listed.

Barbie has got to learn to understand women, ie Julia--lol. He's got to have her back if he wants a happy home--lol. Of course that would be true for husbands too.

Richard

Mike V. said...

True Detective - Leslie yes it's an 8 episode contained story and is really good! Season 2 will be a brand new set of characters and a complete story as well.

LOST - I'll say I probably knew 95% of these but still a LOST article is a LOST article! :-) lol

http://www.buzzfeed.com/jaimieetkin/85-things-you-probably-dont-know-about-lost

24 - Richard, I think you remember better than me what went down with the Russians. Apparently a large portion of season 8 was about it. I looked up the wiki and still can't figure it out (but I'm lazy and don't feel like reading the whole thing lol). What was surprising to me was I totally forgot President Logan returned in the final season and killed himself! lol

Longmire--Walt's got to live, but evidently that guy didn't kill his wife. I can't figure out if Branch is going loopy or on track, but Walt sure surprised him.

Richard

Mike V. said...

Leftovers - Most "LOSTian" of the episodes in that it focused on a single character and then tied back to the "EVENT" from another perspective. We saw that car crash in the pilot episode, but now we met who was in the car and what happened to them. Kind of like we saw John Locke help people from the wreckage but then learned that he was paralyzed before that crash and then rose to his feet on the island. very Lindelof'ian. lol

But the episode was pretty solid too...just following the day in the life of this guy and watching him try to save the church. Did everyone notice that the roulette wheel landed on "23"? When the first one was a 3...i was thinking "oh come on Lindelof, you could've easily made that a 4!" lol Anyway, I think anyone who watched probably knew he was taking way too long to get that money to the bank.

This episode was probably the highlight of the show so far and wouldn't mind them taking this approach in the future. We'll see where things go!

House of Cards - One episode in. I had already seen half of it before, but we had to rehash! lol

MJ said...

Leslie - you still watching Bridge ? Been good so far. Shocked when that cop tried to kill Marco. How could they know that they snuck that girl out of Mexico? Was shocked when a cop tried to kill him. And forgot that his wife had been pregnant.

True Detective - some eps get slow but worth watching.

Last Ship - so they turned a cruiser into a sail boat...interesting.

Longmire - yeah we know Walt has to survive but might be hurt. But we saw Branch arrive at Walts truck and never saw him again - so I'm guessing he's in the woods and will take that guy out. I was hearing banjos in my mind watching that group (Deliverence referance).

Heading out of town for a few days for a funeral - very sad - he was only 37 years old. Very sudden too. So I'll try to catch up with everyon on the weekend. Have a good one.

anyone watching Murder in the First ? I didnt but am hearing it was really good. Might see if I can catch up on it.

Mike V. said...

Bridge - I heard this season is actually starting to live up to the potential of the series and that you might not have had to watch season 1 to enjoy it. Any truth to that? lol (I still have all the old episodes recorded if I ever was going to get to them)

TD - Agree with MJ. It is slow at points, but still really good. Amazing performances.

Murder in First - Have not watched.

Sorry to hear about the Funeral MJ. Definitely way too young.

Leslie said...

Under the Dome - Richard, they actually focused on both dates which is why I thought it might mean something. They showed a close up of the birthday on the screen as he typed it in, and the girl said the combo to the locker slowly as she was opening it. Who knows!

True Detective - Thanks for the confirmation. First DVD coming this week.

Bridge - Have recorded the new episodes, but haven't watched yet.

Murder in the First - I have been watching and liking it. Haven't seen this week's episode yet. If I heard correctly, it will be a complete story unlike that first season of The Killing.

LOST - Mike, I'm surprised there is ANYTHING about LOST you don't know! I will have to check that link out.

MJ - So sorry about the sudden death. Had a long-time friend die suddenly a couple of months ago a week before his 52nd birthday. Still hard to believe.

Leslie said...

LOST - OK, read the 85 things and understand why you may not have known ALL of them. Had heard about some of the actors who originally read for other parts, but Michael Keaton as Jack and Forest Whitaker as Sawyer?????? I don't think so! Each actor was so well suited for their parts that I can't imagine anything other than what we saw.

Mike V. said...

LOST - Oh yeah, actually Michael Keaton as Jack was actually part of the plan when they were going to kill him off in the pilot episode. (I think that info was on the special features of the season 1 DVDs lol) But once the studio said that that is their lead character, they recast for someone looking for a longer stint on television. lol I had never heard of the Forest Whitaker thing!

Anybody else watching LAST SHIP or FALLING SKIES?

Richard

Mike V. said...

Richard, I think MJ watches those. I never could get into them. (really just haven't had time)

TB - Decent episode...and weird as always! Nice to see them go back to Texas one last time. And the party was so out of place but it led to some good moments. Of course Jason and Jessica are getting back together. lol The proposal was good. And of course Sookie is going to get some closure with Bill (and maybe Eric again) before the end. And now Bill is infected?? Crazy...the thing with a final season is...all bets are off on people living/dying. So this could very well be the end of Bill AND Eric.

Leftovers - Still enjoying this series. The missing baby doll led to some good and awkward comedy. Looks like Kevin's wife (amy brenneman) may have some doubts of leaving her old life behind. And what was up with his car shutting down when he used the lord's name in vain???? Oh Damon...you say no mysteries then you just throw that stuff in there. I guess he just doesn't plan on explaining it. lol But I guess if we're to assume that people went missing on some kind of divine/supernatural intervention...then cars shutting down out of the blue might be possible too??? In any case, I'm enjoying the drama. Another interesting thing is all these weird religions popping up after the "departure". Like Kevin's son going "invisible" by putting that ink/paint on his head? HUH?? lol

MJ said...

Richard - i do watch both of those. I'm usually a few days behind so miss commenting. I was watching Dominion too but am very behind on the.

Falling Skies - actually did get to watch last night. Last week - so basicly the two aliens have a bet going on which way is the best to subdue us? LOL No9t a bet really I know - but that was interesting. This week - yikes on Alex's daddy ! And those two brothers - Chief Tyrol from BSG and the guy from Ally McBeal. I'm liking the Mira Sorvino new character - guess they needed a blonde since Maggie left for Garden of Eden LOL

Last Ship - haven't watched last night's yet.

Fringe - We are several into the last season. Forgot all about the tapes. It was still horrible to see Walter shoot Olivia in the head in the 4th finale. Am up to the ep with the people in the woods with that disease and heard the name Donald for the first time.

Anonymous said...

Falling Skies, a lot of comments are not positive on new character, but I think she helps. It is ONLY the actors that make this worth watching. The plotlines are like yoyos going sideways without benefit of speed--lol. Well, I'm shocked that Anne didn't know he was her Dad too since he had an umbilical attached to the baby for goodness sake(through Anne).

It will be interesting to find out more about this impending invasion that is so bad which the Espheni are concerned about. Also, it is hilarious that Tom made such a big deal how they don't need the Volm and yet they keep looking for Volm assistance.

LOST - I think the further we get from the LOST finale, the worst its legacy has been. It's why I take offense every time I'm referred to as a "Lindelof" lover. lol Dexter's ending was MUCH MUCH worse than LOST's. Seinfeld has always been regarded as a bad ending, but it didn't bother me that much either. Funnily enough, (Funnily??) people have been binging LOST after the fact and commenting on the LOST blog along their way. And for the most part, their enjoyment of the final season and episode is very positive. I think the issue is that people had too much time to think with LOST (which was part of the fun of the experience of the show), and set their expectations too high. Everyone had their own theories but didn't accept the fact that the showrunners/writers had their own vision for the show as well.

Plus, everyone on the internet has an opinion now and whoever wrote this one is probably just trying to get people all riled up! lol EW has an ongoing list of Best and Worst finales...and LOST I think is on both lists. lol

FRINGE - Nice MJ, you're plowing right through! I remember not liking that "in the woods" episode. lol Or falling asleep while watching and not caring enough to watch again.

House of Cards - I think we're like 4 or 5 eps into the first season now. Nothing to report yet but it's really good. And Spacey is having the time of his life in that role. My wife confirmed his southern accent (which she has as well) is like "butta" lol

MJ said...

Falling Skies - agree with most of what you said. Just read - they are renewed for a final season for next year.

Last Ship - renewed for a new season for next summer.

SOA - Mike - I can hear you now ! LOL They have announced the premier will be 1 hr 45 min long and yes - starting at 10pm. They are also going to have a special Sutter show after the premier.

Gonna be tough this year - losing both SOA and Justified. Sniff sniff.

Theres some hints about Sleepy's new season - but I avoided them.

MJ said...

House of Cards - yeah Spacey is very good in this show, as is his wife Robin Penn. Season 2 premier WOWed me with something I did not see coming. Frank is def a shark

Mike V. said...

SOA - WHAAAAAT!?!?!?!?!? lol Dude needs an editor! But at this point, who cares?? lol Just end it already! Agreed it will be tough to lose this and justified. But it's time.

I saw Fargo got renewed. I do want to watch the first season. I thought this was supposed to be similar to True Detective in that it's a complete story. So maybe next season would be a whole new cast? Without knowing what happened in season 1 I can't tell for sure. lol

Sleepy - Yeah I know they did their TCA press but I only read the brief snippits that I saw on twitter. I'm sure they didn't reveal too much.

House of Cards - Yeah, The Princess Bride is also very good. :) lol

Dome--Crazy about Lyle and Sam, but now we know Sam killed Angie. And of course Julia not wanting to speak with Barbie is nuts--she takes a stranger's word without question but won't even speak to Barbie. Those two have some dysfunction going on. Great to see Pauline's book and Jim/Rebecca locked up(of course they won't be for long--lol.)

BTW, it's like the robot question has been hijacked by photo sphere ad???

Fargo - yes S2 a whole new story anc cast.

Longmire - what a surprise - Walt lived. LOl about time Vics hubby got a clue. Branch is so out of control - are they going to touch on the fact that he went to where Walt was to have the showdown? I'm beginning to think he's right and that guy ain't dead though. Or someone is really messing with him.

Last Ship - So besides the fact that both the capt and the XO would not both leave the ship on a dangerous mission - then at least put them on different smaller boats. LOL

Leftovers - not really feeling this show that much. I liked last weeks with the preacher the best so far though. So now the sherriff is driving the car of the guy that doesn't exist but whom his daughter saw ? Didn't really get what all those bodies were at the end. So far I find the show weird but not in an interesting way. The son going invisible - did he mean they'd look weird so no one will really look at them too close ?

Strangely - just wednesday my car died on me ! Engine just shut off while I was driving. Had no power brakes or steering. Coasted into a gas station near by. Car started again - had to replace to sensors. And no - I had not takent he lords name in vein. LOL

Strain - getting an old Salems Lot vibe. The guy who doesn't have to breath - he's what, a vampire or something ? I'm already tired of the whole thread with the CDC guy and his family. We get it - he sucks as a husband and dad. LOL

Extant - have only seen the first one so far.

Mike V. said...

Leftovers - It's definitely weird I'll give you that. I'll at least give it until the end of the season to see if some of this stuff starts to make sense. I would expect to be a little confused along the way. lol

No idea on the Invisible thing or the bodies...I guess he could've just thought they'd look at them funny. The bodies I'm sure they'll follow up on. I would think at least. lol

Anonymous said...

Last Ship--exactly, the Capt and XO--I didn't say anything because I thought it too detailed.

Notice there aren't any Captains with a bird--lol-- we have a bunch of Commanders, Lt and Full.

Extant--saw one ep, the others are on Amazon Prime which I won't pay for--CBS is so stuck up and so I don't go out of my way to watch their shows.

Richard

Longmire,
Great Ep!. I think Branch is hugely affected by his experiences(like getting shot and drugged) and that the Indian is still alive. Sean should leave Vic since she has no respect for him. Also, really, Katee would leave the show(resign position), don't think so--almost as bad a bluff as Walt getting killed off the show--lol.

BTW, way too much drama with Vic and Branch. Ferguson's the only stable one and consistently doing his job. He didn't seem happy with the Vic drama this ep, nor really the Branch stuff.

Three long story arcs I believe:
1. Henry's case
2. Branch's Indian trying to kill him.
3. Walt's wife's murder--longest arc.

I wonder how many will be taken care of in the next 2 eps.

I loved and disliked the Vikings theme song being played at the end. It's such a cool song, but seriously, it's for Vikings!

Richard

MJ said...

Longmire - didn't notice the song. I think his wifes murder will be dragged out longer but Branches Indian and Henry part will be fixed this season

leftover - yeah I'll keep watching for a while. Hardest thing - they are all so unhappy. Not one person in town is happy and that's a little unbelievable.

Mike V. said...

Leftovers - yeah I agree. It's pretty depressing. I think I made a comment about a podcast I listen to where they said an interesting route to take would be to introduce a character who benefitted from the departure. Like fell into a bunch of money, some a-hole relatives were gone, etc... And they could actually be happy. A la Locke enjoying the island. Lol

MJ said...

Leftover - that would actually be very interesting. Or go slightly comidic and have a guy who's wife was a real witch and have her gone and him enjoying life now. LOL

Fringe - Ugh - forgot all about Peter putting that Observer tech in his head. But he just took it out. I think I have 5 or 6 more eps left.

Sleepy Hollow - that funeral I went to was in Connecticut so passed very close to Sleepy Hollow NY. Thinking Fox will be re-running season 1 as I saw that the Pilot ep has appeared on my to be taped list for one day next week. Think I might re-watch them.

With Fringe almost done I need other stuff to watch. I have a couple of shorter series on Netflix. One is the The Lake, the other is something with Gillian Anderson where she plays a british or irish cop - heard her performance was great. Might watch all the Saw movies too. Can't believe summer is half over. TvLine already has their write ups of the new shows - havent' had time to read them.

Mike V. said...

Leftover - Yeah that's the same idea...something lighter that might show the other side of things (the positive side lol). Maybe they'll go there. If not, it's gonna be a pretty dreary ride.

Fringe - Yeah that was nuts...enjoy the final episodes!

Sleepy - Not even sure I knew it was a real place! lol A rewatch would be good...probably won't get to it though. But definitely looking forward to season 2!

Other shows - I think you mean "Top of the Lake". I've heard really good things about it. I've heard about the Gillian Anderson show too but forget the name. lol I dread new network shows in the fall!! Just don't know if I can take more on!! But, I say that every year. lol Gotham sounds the most appealing to me for now.

SAW movies - Never watched them but I'm guessing maybe the first 2 are worth watching then it'll get progressively more campy and awful! lol But i have no idea.

We're still watching House of Cards....Frank's whole manipulation to get the education bill passed was awesome with the teacher's strike and the fake house break in and getting the union boss to punch him. Great stuff. Just watched the ep where they're getting the drunk dude prepped for PA Governor Campaign...and the VP was starting to realize how useless and ignored he is. (Isn't that EVERY VP??? lol)

Clone Wars - I've been plowing through this on Netflix since it has been deemed Star Wars canon. It just keeps getting better! In season 3 right now.

Anonymous said...

Leftovers--LOL, on reading comments about how depressing/negative and why I didn't watch after ep1. I really wanted to like it with Liv and others so if it totally changed, I would watch again, but then it wouldn't be at all like the book. Also, the smoking reminds me of a public service message on NOT smoking--lol.

Legends--anyone going to watch with Sean Bean?

Hell on Wheels looks like it's coming back for a fourth season. So Mike, does that say more about HoW or AMC--lol? Atleast it will give me a reason to tune into AMC. Although without Lilly it may not be nearly as good.

Clone Wars--is that the animated series??

So, a "chicken or egg" question. Do you guys pay for Netflix to watch particular shows or watch particular shows that are on Netflix since you've already paid for the service?

Richard

Mike V. said...

Leftovers - It would explain why you don't watch Mad Men! (smoking lol) There are some jokes here and there. I can feel Damon trying to work the humorous side out of the depressing setting. He and the writing crew did it on LOST. Just needs time!

Legends - I knew it was coming but haven't heard much about it. I'll have to look into it.

Hell on Wheels - I have no idea what it says. lol But it's still airs on Saturday, right? If it gets any viewers on Saturday I'm sure it's deemed as successful for its night. lol

Clone Wars - Yeah it is. There was a "movie" in the theater that launched the series...both movie and the series are on Netflix. The final season was cut short when Disney bought Lucasfilm, and was released straight to Netflix. One of the main reasons I didn't watch it when it was airing was because I didn't get cartoon network in HD. lol And this was a show that seemed like it would look amazing in HD. It certainly does!

Apparently Lucas was very involved in the series, so one could argue he went out on a better note than the prequels. lol Obviously, it's a kids show, but it explores some pretty dark themes. I had it explained to me that like Season 1 = Phantom Menace, Season 2 = Revenge of the Sith and Season 3 = Empire Strikes back in terms of quality. I'd say even season 1 was better than Phantom menace! lol But the show definitely improves and explores some interesting areas of the universe. Each ep is like 22 minutes with no commercials so it's easy to fly through them.

Netflix - lol never thought of it that way. I originally had Netflix for the discs and streaming was a bonus feature. But, the first show we streamed to catch up was Dexter. We had missed the first 3 seasons and the first 2 were on Netflix. We plowed through them and realized the awesome potential of the service. Now I'm streaming only, and there always seems to be content that want to watch on the service. So, they got me early and now I'm hooked.

Providing ORIGINAL content on Netflix was a great move to bring in new customers and retain old ones though. House of Cards and Orange is the New Black are both fantastic series.

MJ said...

Legends - i am def checking that one out but am afraid. Everytime Sean Bean does something they kill him. LOL

Netflix - I started with the discs being mailed to the house as well. When streaming started I used it for movies and still do. I don't use it for re-watching older shows as I don't have time. But I use it to catch shows that I missed like Rectify or Top of the Lake (you are right about the name Mike). I do have some older shows that I'd like to rewatch on there but never find the time. Keep waiting for BBT to go there so i can watch it .

Mike V. said...

Legends - I think this is the one show where Sean Bean will defy the odds. lol

Mike V. said...

BTW, happy Comic-Con everyone! lol

I'll post any interesting links I find for TV shows we're interested in. I know there's a Game of Thrones panel, so I'll be sure to share info from that.

Mike V. said...

SHIELD - I still haven't caught up yet but still read this having seen Captain America 2. pretty interesting situation the TV show is in to have to wait until movies are released that may affect the show in a big way.

http://tvline.com/2014/07/24/agents-of-shield-season-2-avengers-age-of-ultron/#

MJ said...

Happy Comic Con yourself.

Yeah - heard the Red Viper will be at GofT - or at leaset discusion of him and Dorne to come.

Shield - you haven't caught up to that one ? LOL I read that article earlier and my take on it was not that they have to slow it down but they def have to pace things to match so they don't reveal spoilers from the movie. Same difference I guess.

Mike V. said...

SHIELD - Actually it was a retrospective on season 1 where they were treading water for a lot of the season because they had to wait for the reveal in Captain America. It's kind of a weird concept on both ends that they expect the audience to have to go to the movies and see these films to continue watching the TV show and vice versa. But, it's kind of cool at the same time. lol

GoT - Yeah, Pablo what's his face (Red Viper) I think will be on the Thrones panel along with Maisie Williams, Sophie Turner, GRRM, and a few others.

Mike V. said...

lol...I said Pably...I think it's Pedro Pascal. :-)

Mike V. said...

ugh typos!! Pablo not Pably!

Anonymous said...

To me, the following is a key point from link on Shield

"And might said destination have to fall shy of Coulson successfully rebuilding S.H.I.E.L.D., given recent hints about where Age of Ultron picks things up with Tony Stark, Black Widow et al?"

Because of coordinating TV, Movies and LOL--"Marvel-verse"

BTW, Thor being a female is not going over well. Sometimes those comic guys are over the top. I used to keep up with some of that stuff moreso when I was younger, but when they started killing and resurrecting characters, etc, I quit paying attention. There was no payoff for keeping up with the storyline, background, characteristics of characters, etc as it could all MAJOR change at the whim of some new writer who had a new and different perspective and wanted to make a name for him or herself--lol. It's like the writers have come to think of themselves and their vision as much more important than the fanbase and years of keeping up. I think partly because they didn't have the years of experience that the fans did??? Of course they would say they need to evolve to keep the characters relevant and to avoid becoming stale and there is truth in that. But some of this stuff is WAY beyond evolving and avoiding stale.

That's why I think we haven't seen the last of Fury or any major character. Which takes away the shock/impact of what would otherwise be a major deal.

I think most hope Thor will come back after his hammer and him make up--lol. And maybe that hope will keep people involved??? It likely won't impact the movies or TV however since Hemsworth is has a contract.

Doing my Comic-Con schedule research. Walking Dead and Game of Thrones are back to back in Hall H today. 12:20 Pacific Time and 1:40 Pacific time respectively. So that's 3:20 and 4:40 Eastern.

Basically that means for any interested: follow tweets in real time, look for articles a little after, and find youtube clips of the panels eventually! lol

Mike V. said...

House of Cards - "spoilers" I just finished Season 1 Episode 11. So 2 left that we'll try to get to tonight. The writing seemed to be on the wall that Peter's story was going to end pretty tragically. Of course, at the hands of Frank?? Well maybe the writing was SORTA on the wall. lol

But, i think I spoiled myself a bit in the craziest way possible. I was listening to a podcast where they were talking about this guy Corey Stoll and how he should be going full on bald for The Strain. And then a week later they found out from Guillermo Del Toro that the fake hair was a plot device so they were all excited this dude was going to be rocking the bald head soon. I never put 2 and 2 together but when I was watching an episode of House of Cards where Frank was hanging out with his college buddies I had to look up IMDB and see if it was the lowest rated episode of season 1 (it was). But, then I saw the stars of the episode and one was Corey Stoll. OHHH I've heard that name before! So, I clicked on his name and sure enough he is the MAIN CHARACTER in The Strain. So, I had a feeling he wouldn't be making it out of season 1! Or at least early on in season 2. lol This is the problem about waiting to binge shows! Too much unintentional information out there!

Anyway, Frank going for the VP seat this whole time? Well plotted, nicely done. Can't imagine if his aspirations are even higher (i.e. to get to the Commander and Chief seat before 2020 lol)

Great show though. Glad we're finally getting to it.

Leslie said...

Netflix - I was the same way...got the DVDs first, then Dexter was my first catch up show to stream, then did my LOST rewatch with it also. I still get one DVD at a time with the streaming

Orange - speaking of Netflix, just finished rewatch of first season with my boyfriend to get him caught up and saw the first episode of S2. Wow! Really different feel to that episode with the new prison and inmates.

Dome - Finally saw this week's episode....yep, Sam killed Angie, but why? I don't really get his motive for that. Agree about Julia, Barbie and Sam.

Anonymous said...

Dome--Sam killing Angie--that's really a good question that I think goes to some of what has gone on for years with him and the Dome. Angie had some thing with the Dome too. And maybe since Angie had the same locker he identified that with the other girl he killed 25 years ago?? Or the Dome did???

I understand, but do wish the GoT stuff was there for future search stuff, etc. But definitely thanks for posting. Will look at links later.

I'm not ready to rewatch LOST a second time yet--lol. Saw a few reruns on I think it was G4?? I'm sure I will get that itch though. My son and I marathoned LOST last summer via DVD. I actually enjoyed it more by marathoning and letting the flow work--if you will.

Last Ship--pretty good ep and now they're all honest and happy. I wonder how long that will be. Looks like it will take a while to get an antidote--not too surprising. Also interesting on monitoring US radios.

Started watching Ray Donovan last night, pretty good show. I like Jon Voigt and Liev.

I never read any comic books and def not super hero ones. i only just found out that the Batman v Superman was not just a movie but a jumping point for a whole slew of DC movies - bith single and Justice League. SIGH. As usual they are over saturating the market.

Thor a female ? Is she going to actually be Thor or be one of his race of people ?

Mike V. said...

TWD - I agree it looks awesome!

DC is trying to catch up with Marvel's whole Avengers success. But it actually started with Man of Steel last summer. This Batman v Superman movie is going to basically have the WHOLE Justice League in the movie (Wonder Woman, Aqua Man, Cyborg are all making appearances). They are really trying to catch up in quick fashion. lol

I have no idea what's going on in the actual Comic-Books but I just assumed Female Thor was a reboot of the franchise where Thor is a girl. lol

Leslie said...

Orange - 5 episodes in now. Definitely a different Piper came back to the prison. Can't believe Alex got out. Funny when Healy got Piper and Pennsatucky to hug it out. She sure is proud of her new teeth! lol Interesting to see more backstories. Are Larry and Polly really going to go there? Vee is certainly stirring things up.

TWD - Yep, looks awesome!

LOST - Thanks for sharing that link, Mike!

Mike V. said...

Orange - Vee was certainly a fun addition this season. Sounds like your thoughts are pretty much where mine were at that point in the season!

House of Cards - We started season 2....OMG shocking is right! Of course, I knew something shocking was going to happen but I still was shocked. lol Really good show. We're 2 eps in. Skipped True Blood and The Leftovers to watch that instead last night. lol We'll see what happens the rest of the week. Might be too obsessed to stop! The HBO shows will be there when we're done!

MJ said...

Orange - did you ever finish Mike ? Don't want to say too much now that Leslie is watching but the end surprised me. Alot. he Leslie - have to got to the one where we learn Morelli's back story (the one who drives the van) ?

House Cards - I cculd NOT believe he pushed her in front of that train !

The Killing - this comes out with their final 6 eps in a few weeks on netflix Leslie.

MJ said...

Once thing was cute.

And no - I just watched Lost last summer I think. LOL

Ray Donovan - watched alst season but am not watching this year.

Mike V. said...

Okay we're onto page 2 of comments. Gonna have to debate starting a 2nd thread for the summer! lol

ORANGE - Yes I finished. Ending was definitely shocking! lol I think I commented on it here when I finished. So search at your own leisure! :)

HOUSE of cards - I know!!

LOST - I think it was 2 summers ago. We have our rewatch well documented here! :-) Time flies!

Leslie said...

Orange - Yeah, I saw that Morello only had a date with Christopher, and she went over to his house after finding out he was getting married. I felt sad for her, even though she is a crazy stalker! Also, the crazy challenge between Nicky and Big Boo and the surprising much needed lesson in female anatomy by Sophia! lol And, don't worry about discussing anything because of me. I'll catch up!

The Killing - Yep, I plan to watch those last episodes.

Mike V. said...

Orange - I think that was my favorite episode of the season. Where we found out she was completely nuts! lol

MISC. (LOST, Vikings) - Phineas and Ferb are doing a tribute to LOST in the fall (that will be the officialy 10 year anniversary of the premiere. And vikings trailer debuted at Comic-Con. I think I linked to it earlier.
