Mad Men - Definitely not traditional (some traditional stuff like Stan and Peggy which was done well)...but it was a pretty fantastic final episode of Mad Men. Don never went home, but he got his calls in with Betty and Peggy the 2 main women in his life. I would've wished for one more Don/Roger scene but it wasn't necessary.

I thought for sure Don would take that seat in the session, but identifying with the other man telling his story was pretty powerful.

Loved the final shot of Betty still smoking to the end.

Who knew Don would just become a hippie in the end? lol But at least he found his smile. I thought it was ambiguous but ending on the Coke Commercial...it was almost like Don may have returned to McCann and used his travels as inspiration for that infamous commercial. Tough to say. I'll have to read different interpretations.

I know there's tons of stuff to talk about, but this show was definitely one of the great ones from start to finish. And we got all the way to November of 1970 by the end.

Catch-up: I'm working on Grimm next. I know it ended last Friday. I have 7 episodes and 10 minutes of the 8th one left. There's a chance I can swing it by the end of the week!

Mike V. said...

Mad Men:
EW's reviewer did think it was meant to imply the smile was that he just came up with the classic ad campaign and returned to work. The Fake Man invented the slogan for "The Real Thing"

That was my initial thought, but then I wasn't sure. lol I'll go with it's still meant to be ambiguous!

Mad Men - I really enjoyed the finale! I definitely took the last scene and figured Don made it back to McCann and used that experience as inspiration for the Coke commercial! It made me smile! That scene with the group was powerful as were his conversations with Betty and Peggy.

I was really hoping that Joan and Peggy were going to go into business together, but after thinking about it, I liked the way that played out. Peggy found love with a man that respects her career, and they make a great team. Thinking of her becoming creative director one day was satisfying for her story. And, you know Joan will be a success on her path, too.

I'm sure more to say, but those were my initial thoughts. Great ending to a great show!

Mike V. said...

Mad Men - Agreed...if Peggy took that job with Joan it would've been "the easy way out" and contradicted everything that has happened for her career arc. She had to stay at McCann and stay the path. But finding love was a big thing for her. It was a great scene. Though...when Stan stopped answering on the phone I blurted out "I GOT OFF THE PLANE!!" LOL

Yeah....it really doesn't make sense any other way with Don. He definitely went back and made that commerical. Which is perfect!

Yep, agreed on all 3 of those scenes. Can't believe how powerful those 2 scenes with "his women" were considering they weren't even in person. But, they still worked great!

Madmen--You know me, I comment then read reviews--lol. Don't want to be poisoned by other's thoughts-lol.

Anyway, when I saw the smile on Don's face then the Coke commercial(which I remember as a child!) it was great. It was such an emotionally involved commercial for the people at that time and transcended so much after Viet Nam, etc. Anyway, back to what I was saying. The smile and then the Coke commercial when I first saw it, said to myself, OK, so this is going to be a point of differences of opinion and discussion, something Weiner wants--lo.

But, later after considering it more the smile then the commercial can only be tied together with him making such a tremendous transcending commercial that effected so many people to such depths(MUCH Bigger deal then the Polar bears for example, I can't think of anything bigger as far as a TV commercial, it was even brought back at one time. As I recall it was done in different ways too and developed further). Otherwise, are we to assume someone else came up with one of the greatest commercials of all time using exactly what happens with Don(hug) and happens to tie what he was doing watching the sun rise and exact same meanings of life.

That commercial was about loving each other and getting along. It was a message of hope and love. We sung it in school for different occassions. I think Don USED Coke to deliver that message to help others. YOu can probably google the discussions and effects of those commercials. I just did and so here you go.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27d_Like_to_Teach_the_World_to_Sing_%28In_Perfect_Harmony%29

Just because he made the commercial doesn't mean he went back to being a robot at McCann. He could have the freedom to do the work he wants to do and how he wants to do it. That's what he's done the last several years anyway.

Richard

Mike V. said...

Mad Men - lol...see I knew it..AMBIGUOUS! :-) I know I know...i've said both things.

I definitely remember that commercial as well. Well...I wasn't born yet if it's from that early in the 70s but I definitely know of the infamous commercial. And I actually think I saw people speculating that Don might come up with that slogan because the timing matched up.

But, I will say Richard that I definitely commented initially before reading a thing. lol

Mad Men - Definitely noticed the similarity in the girl with the pigtails. lol

Grimm--this show did what Shield can't do. It is so much better than most shows and yes do in large part because it's willing to kill off key characters like GoT. I was saying to myself, there's no way Nick's going to kill Juliette when he was grabbing her throat. I was like, yea typical TV show with no guts. Then the arrows flew and WOW, huge Surprise.

Very disappointed that they don't think Adalind and Nick will get together. I mean she's not even really wessen anymore. Wouldn't it be crazy if she becomes a grimm? LOL of course there aren't any guy grimms except Nick.

Can Grimms have harems?

Will say more later.

Richard

MJ said...

Grimm - Whew - alot was happening on this finale. Loved them putting a head in a cop car's truck ! LOL As well as Adalind putting the head in the hotel closing the door - opening it again and screaming. They fooled me - after Nick did not kill Juliette I did not think they were killing her off. Really fooled me what I saw the guy in the helicopter was the man helping Nick's mom. That fed chick in the end - I don't even remember the deal with her truthfully.

Anonymous said...

Grimm--Yea the King being pushed out was a big surprise. This girl is going to be some kind of powerful and there's no telling which side she'll be with.

I just wished with all these new powerful girls they would throw in a token boy now and then. We'll see what Adalind's new baby is. But certainly the one already born went through a lot of things as Adalind was going through her transformation.

Richard

Anonymous said...

Grimm--I just read an interview with the show runners and a Grimm/Adalind get together is not out of the question as she has changed a lot and he has changed some.

But, I can't see it being all romantic.

Richard

Madmen, Betty smoking at the end was great. She's enjoying what time she has left.

Somewhat surprised Peggy didn't join Joan. Kind of surprised she stayed at McCann, but she seems to have figured out how to make the place work for her.

Roger and Megan's Mom was great.

Private jets are the only way to travel!!

IN my quick FF review of a few eps from prior seasons I saw one where Peggy and Stan worked with each other totally nude. They were trying to prove something to each other, just nuts.

I think the absolute end of the show was fantastic. But somewhere toward the end Don should have been reunited with his kids. The show made a point of it many times and how important they were too him. He seems to finally have figured things out and grown up.

I think the love and acceptance angle is VERY important from the man speaking while in the chair. That each is two way. Don was raised without any love nor acceptance and didn't really understand them. It was his journey on finding and understanding what love is and is not that we watched. He obviously understands now he had a great thing with Betty. He seems to love her more now than before.

Richard

Madmen--so rewatched with my wife. One thing we agreed on was Joan and Richard being in different phases of their life. He's looking to enjoy life after making his money and she's till young enough to want to build businesses. I could so understand both perspectives and like she told Roger, he and Marie met with good timing.

Blacklist - finally watched finale. It got lost in the DVR - forgot about it. Agree - finally stated Red is ot her dad. Really - the web still thinks he is ? LOL I did not think she would shoot that guy. And they really messed with Cooper - faking his cancer was a horrible think to do.

Orphan Black - any one watching? Crazy season this year.

MJ said...

Grimm - I understand your desire for more stronger men between Shield and Grimm - so how does it feel ? LOL It's only been recent years that we have finally gotten the stronger women roles. Alias starring Jennifer Garner is the first one I can really recall in modern times - though that could be wrong. Memory isn't what it used to be. I also read that article where they say a relationship could happen since they are having a baby. But I think Adalind is still a wesen - she suppressed the Hexinbeist but it's not gone far as I know. But yeah - this kid is something else all together.

Mad Men - don't watch it but heard about the coke commercial ending. Strangely another show I just watched last night featured an old coke ad from the 70's too. Happyish - either on Showtime or HBO - is actually pretty funny. But what are the odds that 2 shows both on Sunday featured 2 different old coke commercials ??

Anonymous said...

Blacklist, MJ--well not all the internet people but it seems the ones who had always believe Red had to be the father have been posting incredible amounts on WSJ and BSG sites among others. The stupid EW recaper even said there was room for ambiguity on her shooting her father!!

This may sound rude, crude and socially irresponsible, certainly not PC, but it seems those posters are likely girls with daddy issues--lol.

I used to be really into that show, but not so much any more. It's actually become more fun to watch that way.

MJ, what type ship were you on?

Richard

Mike V. said...

Orphan Black - I watched the premiere and fell behind. I'll catch up eventually! Currently flying through 8 episodes of Grimm. I think I'm in the 6th to last now.

I'll follow up on other posts in a bit. :)

Mike V. said...

Blacklist - We're also catching up with this now that we're done the onslaught of TV. Definitely has gotten better for this final group of episodes. Red was shot and recovering. Tom is going to help Lizzie find out more about Red. I think we have 3 left.

Mad Men - MJ, was it the "I'd like to buy the world a coke" ad? It's one of the most famous commercials ever and the suggestion was that possibly the main character ended up coming up with it. But, it was left ambiguous. They have been planting clues all season towards it though. He was going to land the Coca Cola account at his new gig, but he abandoned his post to travel the country and find himself. lol (Spoiler alert??)

In response to Richard...I thought I commented on this and maybe I did...but I think Peggy going with Joan would've been a total abandonement of her character arc that she's stuck to the whole series. And it wasn't what she is good at.

The Stan/Peggy thing was a very slow burn over the series. Some critics think it was too "on the nose" in the finale and that it was fan service. Whatever, I still enjoyed it!

I don't know about Don and his kids. I don't know if you remember that scene last season or the year before where he was hanging out with his son and he told someone he felt nothing. I think the only one he really bonded with was Sally. Betty was right in this case. He really didn't have a place taking care of those kids. Even if he did grow up. I'm sure if he proved he was going to stick around and not go on any more benders then yeah I'm sure he got to see his kids more.

I didn't even make the connections with all of the Phone Calls and the episode being called Person to Person. Basically every important event in the episode happened on the phone. Don and his 3 women (which the guy at the office told him there are 3 women in every man's life). Peggy and Stan. Joan conducting her new business and choosing her business over the man (which yes, they were in 2 different phases of life).

Good stuff. I thought it was a really good finale to a really great series. Some of these critics are too pretentious. Ending a show is impossible and they still have to criticize it! I did like one person's analysis that a finale is a bookend to the pilot. And the show is everything that happens in between. I agree to that to some extent. Though even Mad Men's finale touched on A LOT of stuff that happened in between (especially Don's reflection in his call to Peggy and his emotional breakdown during the man's monologue). But yes, it should close the doors opened in the pilot.

Anonymous said...

Madmen, further on my rewatch. When Don called Peggy there were 4 things that hit me.
1. She told him to come HOME.
2. She said that this has happened before at McCann and it would be OK to come back.
3. That he should come back, they want him.
4. That he could do great things for Coke, doesn't he want to work with Coke.

I continue to find more and more that makes it less and less ambiguous--lol!

MIke, my wife agrees with you, that Betty was making the right call--lol. My wife was with Fox when they took on the NFL and was in Advertising. She has lots of stories. She quit watching Madmen because of Don's philandering, found it disghusting.

Richard

Leslie said...

Mad Men - I didn't feel like the ending was ambiguous at all. Peggy's conversation with Don was key to that. Did anyone catch what Joan's company was called? When she talked to Peggy, she mentioned it wouldn't be real without 2 names, and when the girl answered the phone later, she said 2 names, but I didn't catch it even with rewinding. I haven't yet had a chance to watch again.

Anonymous said...

Madmen, Leslie, yea I noticed that too. Something like Holloway/Hollis or similar? Not sure

Richard

Mike V. said...

It was Holloway Harris after her 2 last names. (I had to look up why it was called that but I thought they were both her last names lol)

Yeah, I'm pretty content thinking he went back to make that commerical. It makes sense considering he was in such a dry rut with coming up with ideas lately...and then he came up with the greatest idea of all after he identified his personal issues.

Leslie said...

Mad Men - Holloway Harris....that makes sense now, but I forgot about Holloway.

Mj said...

BLacklist - Richard - LOL on girls with Daddy issues !

I was on the Destroyer Tender USS Samuel Gompers - the only type that women were allowed on at the time. Home port was Alameda Ca (outside of Oakland/SanFran). Got to do 2 west pacs - which I loved ! Shortly before I got out they started to let women on the re-fueling ships. There are no more Destroyer tenders in the fleet any more - they did away with them. We basicly did all the repairs for other ship - now from what I have heard the navy lets the repairs be done over seas in the foreign ports.

Anonymous said...

MJ, Good to know about USS Samuel Gompers. I've GOT to google that name, it just sounds great.

Anyway, the overseas repairs remind me of USS Cole stuff in a way. Not everyone is happy with some of the foreign ports for repair. So, you must have seen Japan and Hawaii then?

Flash--I really didn't like some of this finale, but have to give it huge cred for killing off a major player. Which, again, Shield just can't seem to do--lol. I didn't like that Barry chose his current friends over his Mom and Dad along with the future he was supposed to have before Thawne killed her and Dad went to prison. Not so much that he made that choice but just how we've had all these eps and effort invested in getting that night corrected. Then when he has the chance, after all this time, he wimps out. That was SOOO STUPID.

But I liked some of the other stuff.

Richard

MJ said...

Flash - could not watch last night.

Navy - we called her the Sammy G. Went to Hawaii many many times, Japan once - Sasebo which was not great. Hong Kong, Singapore, Phillippines many times, Diego Garcia, Seychelles once. AFter I left they went to Korea - was sorry I missed that. LOL . When I was in the Iraqi were ok and Iran was bad. Sat off the coast of Oman for 45 days one time - which was dull. I ws in from 86 to 90 - got out just as the very first Gulf war was starting

Anonymous said...

MJ,
I"m a little older than you. So, I can recall when Iran was good before the shaw was overthrown. YOur statement:

"When I was in the Iraqi were ok and Iran was bad".

Just hits home on so many fronts.

LOL on not going to Korea, yea their food stinks. So, you spent some time in warm to hot climates, hope you had A/C! And that was a good time to go to Hong Kong.

So, did you enjoy the equitorial crossing ceremony, I forget it's name?

Richard

Mike V. said...

Mad men - ambiguity put to rest. Don came up with the ad. Confirmed. Lol

MJ said...

Rochard - The Shellbac Initiation ? LOL DId it twice so got to the a wog and a shellback. It was fun - obviously more fun the second time. ;-D I adored Hong Kong - was my fave. Though loved the phillipines cause of just all the fun and partying - cause when your in your mid 20's it's all about the party. First year or so I was a Boatswainmate so no a/c - but after that I was a postal clerk so had pplenty of a/c.

Flash - I was so sad to see Eddie shoot himself so that Eobard would not ever come to be. I was pretty confused about Flash allowing his mom to die again though. So is he not the flash any more ? Faux-Wells never came to be so we never had the particle accelerator incident which made him the Flash to begin with.

Vikings - we have officially started Vikings. Got 2 in last night. I couldn't believe they cut that guys arm off ! I can't remember from last season - why is King Eckbert helping this princess from Mercia ? So I feel like this guy back at Largatha's home who is plotting against her is a red herring to ferret out the ones willing to turn on her. The seer said she had a betrayer in her midst - so showing him is too obvious now. DOn't tell me Richard - want to be surprised ! LOL Def don'thave a good feeling about the guy all three women were dreaming about just showing up.

Anonymous said...

Pollywog/Shellback, that's it. I'm sure it was a LOT more fun the 2nd time.

Flash--That's a GREAT point about Barry becoming the Flash. Without Wells there is no explosion in the facility to create the Flash. Thawne would never have been born, nor any of his ancestors so lots of changes would be in place. I don't think the show will go there since they need the Flash-lol. This finale wasn't very good to me and this is another reason why. It doesn't make sense unless Flash is made differently?? And another reason I don't like time travel in almost any show. And such a HUGE hole in not saving his Mom. If they were honest with the time travel, at the end of the finale he would have lost his Mom, Dad in jail and him left without any power.

BUT, if Wells were never born, wouldn't Barry's Mom be alive?? It doesn't make sense for Wells to have been born, killed Barry's Mom and then die due to his ANCESTOR not having children. For him to have died from a lack of ancestors means by definition he couldn't have been born--lol.

Vikings - MJ did you notice who tha actor is playing the guy who just showed up (from the girls' dreams)? Once you realize who it is, I can't see him any other way. lol

Grimm - Ugh...I was really on track this week to wrap up tomorrow, (Have 4 episodes left)....my daughter woke up at 5am which woke my son up and there went my morning TV/Workout time! lol But, it's an enjoyable show to binge through.

Tomorrowland - So, I'm sure I've discussed this before. It's written by Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird (director)...but the story is from the 2 of them as well as Jeff Jensen (EW LOST Recapper lol)....Lindelof was so impressed with his analysis in his recaps that he recruited him to help come up with the show's story. I think it looks awesome...not sure how the reviews have been or how it will do....but I'm totally going tomorrow!

Modern Family - Finale was good. They have me really invested in this Haley relationship (can't remember the dude's name which is funny because I remember his girlfriend's name is Beth). I feel like maybe they copied off of Community with the whole iPad on the segueway thing. But it was done much better on MF! Because Phil is awesome! lol

Late Show - Letterman - End of an era! I watched the final 3 episodes. Dave is definitely past his prime but he had a nice send-off last night. Though, if anyone recorded the episode thinking it would only be an hour they missed a half hour worth of goodbyes and a montage of photos from his Late Night/Late Show days (Chronological) during the Foo Fighters final performance. Granted...the fact that I stayed up to watch, and then had to wake up at 5am...means I'm very tired this morning! lol

Anonymous said...

Flash--the only thing is maybe Eddie when taken thorugh the wormhole was revived and lives and therefore Wells lives?

So, time travel complicated with maybe not for sure death--lol.

MJ said...

Flash - time travel hurts my brain. LOL

Vikings - I did recognize him - but now I can't remember who it was for discussion. LOL. I know I commented aloud about the bags under his eyes - just can't come up with the name.

Tomorrow land - didn't know Jensen was involved in writing. Interesting. Probably will not see it. So I wonder if Disney will re-do Tland so that it matches the movie ? Cause I saw promos for the movie and nothing like disney world.

J said...

Letterman - meant to say I also taped the last 3 eps. When he stared at 12:30 am I used to watch him every night. By the time he moved to 11:30 I was going to bed at midnight. ;-D

Vikings - Richard isn't there a site that you lioked alot to read the episode recaps ?

Mike V. said...

Tomorrowland - I think they added the logo from the movies onto trashcans in Tomorrowland. lol But if you look closely at some of the teases in the preview, you can see a shot of Space Mountain.

Vikings - It's Keamey from Season 4 of LOST! lol (and one episode of season 6 if you want to get technical)

Letterman - I used to watch The Late Show all the time (And saw his final Late Night closing with Bruce) His first episode on CBS had Bill Murray and Billy Joel..I remember it like it was yesterday. lol And Paul Newman standing up in the crowd asking "where the hell are the singing cats?" Good stuff.

MJ, if you didn't watch last night you might not have the whole recording. His broadcast went well into the Late Late Show timeslot. (like 20 minutes into)

Vikings--LOL--I kind of did my own here as far as summary recap. EW, Forbes, Variety and a few others are out there. Normally it's easier to google Vikings with the Title Name to get them to come up. The EW recapper is totally missing the religious aspect and how this stuff is setting up the 100s war and war of the roses. BTW, the war of the roses serves as a lot of the source material for Game of Thrones. Actually most recappers don't have a clue about what's really going on as it relates to true history.

Here are 3 for Warrior's Fate.

Thanks for the links Richard. I knew you had a few places you would go to.

Lettermen - dang it ! i went over 5 mins but did not think they would let it bleed that far into late late show. I also saw his last on NBC and first on Cbs.

I'm off tomorrow so probably won't be on this weekend.

Everyone have a great memorial weekend !

Wayward Pines--So, looks like the wife and son are coming. I was wondering if his wife and son he saw in the hospital were from the future. Given how time in WP is fluid. Bumber the waitress was killed. She was nice.

Good building ep.

Grimm - Up to the finale which i may try to watch since I'm working from home. Wow....Juliette led the Royals to Nick's mother and they killed her?!?! My gut instinct was they faked her death or it's not really her....but that head sure looked like hers. Maybe Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (sp) couldn't resume her recurring role or something. Now how will Trubel find out that she's related to Nick!?!? lol (still my theory maybe it will be unveiled in the finale!)

Wayward Pines - Recorded both eps....not sure if i'll get to it or not. Keep posting updates on of it's worth it! lol

Red Nose Day - I recorded and fast forwarded through...but the Game of Thrones the Musical was pretty darn hysterical. I'd look it up!

Grimm - All caught up! Wow...can't believe they killed Juliette! I mean, I didn't really see any other way out of it after they destroyed her character. lol But, definitely opens some new avenues for the show. Those final 8 episodes i binged through were really good.

Now I have to figure out what's next on the list. I have 4 Gothams and 4 or 5 Orphan Blacks. still want to watch Daredevil too.

Anonymous said...

I would do Wayward Pines. Then we could post about the clues, etc.

Grimm was good. Although I think we're trading one not so good actress for another in Trubl.

Don't you want Adalind and Nick to get together??

Richard

Mike V. said...

I'll try to watch Wayward...I'm going to be out of town next week though so might fall a little more behind. Still not even sure when I'm going to watch Sunday's Game of Thrones or if I'll be of sound mind when I'm watching it!! LOL

Grimm - Is Trubel a series regular now? I haven't read any articles. I really don't care about Nick and Adalind but obviously the one conflict between them has been eliminated.

Anonymous said...

I don't know for sure if Trubl is going to be a regular, but I'm thinking that way with Juliette.

I mean Nick can't live in that house by himself--lol. So, maybe Trubl moves in and maybe Adalind with his baby--lol

Loved tomorrowland. Just with lindelof attached it will have its critics but it was a fun ride and the characters were fun to follow through the journey. All of the Disney owned tie ins were hysterical too. Pretty cool that Jensen got to be involved in the journey from story to screen. He has a column in the new issue of ew about his experience. I'll see if it's online. But here's a good interview with lindelof about how he approaches his projects and critics these days
http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/05/22/damon-lindelof-s-persecution-complex-there-are-people-who-are-gunning-for-me.html

Btw happy Memorial Day weekend to everyone and happy 5 years of the end of lost! Can't believe it's been that long.

MJ said...

Grimm = nope - they killed his mo. Actress not available to come back though for the end of her character. I like trubel ! Think they are gong to have Nick and Adalind at least try to make a go of it - he is the father of her second kid after all.

Lost - 5 years . Wow !

Vikings - OMG ! so far been great. Trouble with understand ig some of it - and no time yet to read comments/recaps. Have 2 left which I will probably finish tonight.

Keamy - so this guy walking around has Odin in him ? Whaaat? Heard about Siggy dying by accident - but sad. Did NOT know about Athalstan dying ! Still not sure I understand why Ragnar let Floki take charge of the Paris raid, but know they are going for another try. Totally bought that Rollo, Floki and Bjorn all died ! Sucker that I am. LOL

Wayward - not seen yet as have been Vikings heavy so far.

Daredeveil - maybe next ? LOL

Still have House of Cards to watch too, and OINB coming soon !
