TV Discussion: Week of 5/26/2013 - 6/2/2013

Hello TV Addicts!  Here's our weekly place to discuss the non-recapped shows.  We'll be getting into some pretty intense Game of Thrones discussions.  We have some book readers and some non-book readers.  So, we'll try to precede any book stuff with a "SPOILER WARNING".   See you in the comments!

Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend! I did watch Mad Men and will comment later (best ep of the season, I'd say).

No GoT this week but that doesn't mean we can't discuss it! lol

Is anyone watching the new Netflix season of Arrested Development? They haven't missed a beat...still hysterical. I'm 5 eps in if anyone wants to discuss.

Gotta go write a quick Revolution recap. Good ep, one more recap to go. lol

well 2 more recaps...since I still have to write this one! :)

I was not happy on Sunday night when I was ready to watch GOT and then remembered that it wasn't going to be on. So, I did some reading on Ice and Fire. I can see where Tyrion will be more involved in the last ep.

Madmen--good advice given to Peter that he's got to be able to manage his personal afairs first. Ted and Peggy, he needs to get his head on straight too. Don and Betty and her line about Megan and love was very interesting. I have to finish the ep to comment more.

Madmen--finished. Ok, great again with Don/Betty during breakfast. He was the 'mistress"--lol. And he obviously views sex differently than Betty. But, why did she want to get close to him vs just acting on impulse/opportunity.

Peggy, wow she must feel horrible. Reminded me of a recent movie where a girl was doing a thesis and got her boyfriend to change. I don't feel sorry for Abe getting stabbed. But, Ted, wow the guy must be bipolar. "It's a new week"-not much of a rudder there.

Other than the obvious symbolism, I'm not sure what the last scene was all about with Peggy standing in the middle of Don/Ted next to the conference room. Just thinking maybe more there, but don't see it yet. Maybe she'll be the balance.

********GoT (book stuff spoilers) - Hmmm...keep in mind this is only the first HALF of book 3. The heavily involved Tyrion stuff that I'm thinking about doesn't happen until the END of book 3 (which would be season 4). :-) lol But, you may be referring to something else.

But, I'm rewatching what has aired of season 3 so far....I can see they've been setting up a subplot of Tyrion wanting revenge for whoever tried to take his life in Blackwater. In the books, it was Cersei that ordered the hit. In the show it's Joffrey. (They are just trying to turn Joffrey into even a worse monster than he was...and humanize Cersei further than she was in the books) But, I think by adding the Joffrey element...they may trying to throw more suspense into the PW and Tyrion's trial in season 4. We know who the real culprit will be....but maybe they'll try to play up the mystery since Tyrion wants his revenge. Add in his drunken comment he made to Joff at his own wedding...and you can kind of see that's what they're doing. I still wonder when PW will happen...ep 10 or early S4. There's probably enough they can do in ep 10 without having to resort to another shocker of a W. lol

As for Game of Thrones not being on...I'm glad it wasn't. Ep 9 is going to be a monumentous event and it deserves eyeballs. I wonder how the Liberace movie did with the ratings. I was shocked when I was at a party and people started leaving because they wanted to get home to watch it! LOL

Mad Men - Yeah there was so much going on in that episode I don't even know where to start commenting. Don being the mistress was interesting. And Betty calling him out on who he is. Betty definitely loves getting the attention again with her new bod. Even Henry got in on the fun. lol Of course the delivery of the line "can you believe I've had 3 children?" was butchered only in a way that January Jones could do. lol I can't believe Peggy stabbed her boyfriend! Love that he dumped her and it had nothing to do with that. I felt like something bad was coming in that scene, but stabbing him? That's nuts. and a little funny. Then getting shot down by Ted (in so many or not so many words) at the end had to be rough. Don't know about the symbolism....but as we've discussed... I usually don't look into it too much. But, I'm sure there are 100 page essays dedicated just to those final moments of the episode out there somewhere. lol

Oh man and then Megan and the lesbian encounter!? That scene was hysterical. How she kept trying again and again. Funny stuff. And then Don "coming back" to Megan. We'll see if it lasts this time!

Wow - people were leaving to watch Liberache? It willonly be on a gizillion times. Lol

Mike V. said...

So I may have exaggerated a tad. :) Maybe one person was leaving to see Liberace. But yeah...I thought the same thing. lol (DVR people!!) Ratings were pretty decent for Liberace...but it was half of what Game of Thrones does in that time slot. I still think the ratings would've taken a hit for Thrones and I'd imagine they want eyeballs for these final 2 eps this season!

I take it no Arrested Development fans in the house? That's a shame. :)

2 big actors in Liberace film, they've got to make money with it, but no one I know watched it or will. I kind of wonder if it filled in the GoT slot to get as big of ratings as possible--I tuned in and when Liberace came on I remembered and moved onto something else.

GoT, I think we agree on one key element for last ep which will shock anyone who has not read the books. But, I'm still looking for that cliff hanger, maybe it will involve Essos?

Richard

I'm sure there was an audience for a movie like that and there are some people that don't go out on Memorial Day wknd. We recorded it, but don't know if I'll ever watch it. It IS a Steven Soderbergh (sp) film, which is probably a reason why he was able to get his usual big name actors (Damon - Ocean's movies, Douglas - Traffic, plus a slew of others).

*****Book Discussion on figuring out Game of Thrones Finale Cliffhanger (abbreviated spoilers lol)******

Agreed there needs to be some kind of cliffhanger and I can't figure out where they'll go with it either. I don't remember anything in Essos being too cliff hangery at this point in the story. I'm sure they could make it into one. Possibly could be something in the north again (at the wall perhaps)....I still think PW would be the biggest shocker to end on especially right after RW. But I'm still betting that will be next season since we haven't even introduced the Red Viper yet. Oh right...I forgot, I made the prediction of possibly revealing Lady S. I think that's what I'm going to go with. It would mirror back nicely to the Beric reveal earlier this season. And they did say they wanted to make season 3 and 4 seem like 2 seasons thematically and not 2 halves of one book. That's what I'm going with! lol But, I'm prepared to be wrong!

GoT--Book Stuff----

I think you're right that the conversion will be a big shock scene in last ep. Just wondering about a cliff hanger too. And that's why I was going with T since he's been so much at odds with J. I bet we'll know a lot more after next ep.

Richard

Book stuff. Spoilers

No I'm saying lady s WILL be the cliffhanger. I'm not sure what T cliffhanger there could be at this point.(besides his accusation at the pw)But maybe you're remembering something different. His big moments come at the end of book 3. So does lady s for that matter but that could be placed anywhere.

Big Bang Theory(BBT) I watched several of the last eps last night and it was great. I checked it out on wiki and found that it is up over double from it's first season and has been growing the last 2 seasons. Not many shows can say that for 6 seasons. They have just one more season left at this point.

I think Amy has added a lot and it will be interesting to see what happens with Leonard on the ship doing research. Did Raj really loose Lucy forever, I don't think so.

Richard

Mike V. said...

Yeah BBT really benefitted from syndication. The show replays very well and it got people hooked enough to start checking out new episodes. It's one of the highest rated shows on television these days.

I know a lot of people can't stand it because it's a multi-camera sitcom which people assocaite with a "LAUGH TRACK"....People now prefer single camera sitcoms that were made popular by The Office (but preceded by Arrested Development and Scrubs). I love me some Parks and Dan Harmon helmed Community (and New Girl...fantastic), but I don't think that diminishes the 4 camera sitcom. They are 2 totally different forms of entertainment. BBT is performed in front of a Live Studio Audience and it's meant to be played big for laughs while these other shows sometimes go for the more subtle joke.

And of course, HIMYM DOES use a laugh track because they are doing a hybrid of a Single Camera and multi-camera sitcom. With all of the flashbacks and flashforwards they do there is no way they could do it in front of an audience and have them understand what's going on. The magic happens in the editing room! lol

So that all being said, I love BBT. Bernadette and Amy becoming series regulars definitely added a new flavor to the show. But, they still find ways to balance that with the boys having their dorky fun. So it all still works. And no, I don't think Raj will lose Lucy. She seems to be a mainstay as well. As for Leonard doing research...I'm sure it'll be like other times where he disappeared for the summer and then we pick back up when he returns. (or maybe he'll return in a couple episodes similar to Howard at the space station). The predictable route to go would be for Penny to become acquainted with a "man's man" while Leonard is gone and create some romantic tension. We'll see if they can be a little more creative than that! lol

BBT -keep saying I will start it in reruns and catch up but never seem to find its starting point.

True Blood- watched rcap Authority on S5 and realized i'd forgot alot. Must rewatch some eps

Mike V. said...

TB - I remember a lot about The Authority and Bill being covered with blood at the end as he's some new dark terror to look out for. lol

BBT - I wouldn't worry about chronology with this show. Each show holds up pretty well as a stand-alone. Sure, the cast has expanded since the beginning and relationships start and end and what not....but, it's not THAT bad. I'd at least watch the Pilot episode first if you can...it's actually really funny for a pilot ep.

BBT-I think it's interesting to see how the actors have changed over 6 years. Esp Cuoco.

Did you hear about the animal planet's show mermaids? 3.6M viewers and NOAA had to issue a statement that it's not involved--LOL. OMG there were reportedly millions of people who believed it!!!!

I might call it TV gone wild--lol. Reminds me of a phrase credited to PT Barnum

That's hysterical on the Mermaids thing. I saw articles upon articles about Mermaids and didn't know where they were coming from. But, that's fantastic that people believed it. Wow.

BBT - Agreed, her character definitely has changed the most since the beginning. And any scene between her and Sheldon is golden. My favorite being the Christmas gift episode from season 2. lol

BBT - Definitely one of my favorites right now! MJ - You should watch this one! I think Lucy will stay around. She's got to meet the gang.

Heard about the mermaids! So funny!

Nashville - Just a comment that this turned out pretty good.

mj said...

I also heard that folks were believing about the mermaids! I can't laugh too hard at them as i got suckered by aBlair Witch docu on A&E. Lol. Knew no witch but believed students actually disappeared. Sofunny though.

Continuum - Richard i think its back a week from today. Yay
